Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced his exit from the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE, concluding a temporary role in which he spearheaded efforts to streamline federal operations and reduce government spending.
Posting on his platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk expressed gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for appointing him to oversee the DOGE. The initiative had been focused on trimming bureaucracy and reducing federal job numbers across multiple agencies.
Musk wrote, “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.” Doge is more than a department—it’s a mindset that will continue to grow.
White House officials began the formal process of offboarding Musk late Wednesday. His role was capped at 130 working days per year under the rules governing special government employees, a limit he was expected to reach by the end of May.
Although his exit had been anticipated, it came just one day after Musk publicly criticized Trump’s latest budget proposal. Speaking to CBS, he voiced concerns about the multi-trillion-dollar tax cuts and increased defense spending included in the legislation, which he believes will worsen the national deficit.
Musk didn’t hold back in his comments, stating that the bill may be big and it may be beautiful, but it can’t be both. Originally from South Africa, Musk’s involvement in government was always intended to be short-term. However, his influence on the Department of Government Efficiency—and the broader push for a more accountable federal system—is expected to resonate long after his departure.
