Router Protocol’s team announced a September 30 shutdown, citing unprofitable bridging economics across the sector.
Competitors LayerZero, Across, Axelar and deBridge continue operating despite the market-wide infrastructure repricing.
Token holders must withdraw ROUTE from exchanges before delisting, as the protocol will open‑source select components.

Router Protocol is shutting down, and its closing argument is that the problem was never Router. The team says bridging economics have run net negative across the whole category for a long stretch. It names LayerZero, Across, Axelar, and deBridge as repriced alongside it, and calls the result a market-wide repricing of infrastructure rather than a verdict on any single team. All four of those competitors remain in operation.

Router Protocol announced on September 5 that it will fully close by September 30 after more than four years, in a statement describing the process as a full and orderly wind-down.

The Business Diagnosis

The team frames its post-mortem around a product question: whether a company is selling a painkiller, a vitamin or dopamine. It says Router built interoperability as a painkiller for a multichain world, and that for a period it was one.

Then the pain moved. Standards commoditized the simple corridors, and activity consolidated onto fewer chains. Much of crypto’s demand, the team argues, turned out to be “dopamine wearing a painkiller’s clothes” — when the speculative tide receded, the fee pool meant to sustain the infrastructure receded with it.

A business running painkiller-grade infrastructure on vitamin-grade revenue inside a dopamine-driven market is structurally upside down, the team says, adding that the diagnosis applies to most of its category rather than to Router alone. Bridging economics are thin, it argues, compressing fees against costs that never stop.

The Fee Model Left No Reserve

One disclosure explains the absence of runway. The team says every fee the protocol earned was directed into ROUTE buyback-and-burn rather than into a treasury reserve.

That structure returns value to token holders while the protocol is earning, and leaves nothing to draw on when revenue falls. Over the past year the team says it explored commercialization, licensing, acquisition and months of conversations with teams who might take the stack on, and that none reached an outcome sustaining a protocol team.

What the Market Did

ROUTE traded at $0.00005177 on September 5 at 12:12 UTC, down 49.16% over 24 hours, according to data from CoinMarketCap. Market capitalization stood at $35,130 against a fully diluted valuation of $51,770.

Trading volume over the same period was $5,160, down 18.4%, giving a volume-to-market-cap ratio of 14.61%. Liquidity measured 0.47% of market capitalization. Circulating supply was 678.73 million ROUTE against a total supply of 982.07 million and a maximum of 1 billion, held across 3,780 addresses.

The 303,333,198 ROUTE the team says will be permanently burned from the treasury accounts for the entire gap between total and circulating supply.

What Router Built

The team started with a bridge, then added Router Nitro across more than 60 chains, cross-chain messaging and an intents framework. Rather than deploy on an existing chain, it built its own Layer 1 on Cosmos, which it says was a decentralization decision rather than a branding one.

It argues the record shows the work was not wasted. The intents framing it published in 2023 is close to what the industry later converged on through ERC-7683 and NEAR Intents, now carried forward by teams with significantly more capital. It also built Open Graph Architecture, its answer to aggregation spaces run on bilateral deals rather than merit.

The road included two security incidents the team discloses directly. A solver exploit in February 2025, where roughly 80% of affected value was recovered through negotiation, and a chain-level exploit in July 2025 where the funds were not recovered.

What Happens to ROUTE

Router will coordinate with centralised exchanges to close ROUTE listings. Holders on those venues are told to follow each exchange’s delisting and withdrawal instructions and withdraw before the relevant deadline, with any balance remaining after delisting handled under that exchange’s policies.

The team says it will not launch any new program connected to ROUTE, and that any market or liquidity pool created after the delistings is independent of Router Protocol. It intends to open-source selected components of what it built.
