Financial infrastructure provider Bottomline has entered a strategic partnership with blockchain network Chainlink to explore cross-chain and cross-border payment capabilities for its network of more than 600 banking clients.
According to an official announcement published on September 3, Bottomline processes more than $16 trillion in payment transactions annually across its institutional platforms.
Under the terms of the agreement, Chainlink will act as an interoperability and orchestration layer. This infrastructure connects Bottomline’s existing software architecture directly to both public and private permissioned blockchain environments.
Integration of traditional messaging standards
The technology integration is structured to allow participating banks to execute on-chain transactions without modifying their core operational procedures. Institutional clients will interact with distributed ledger networks through standard ISO 20022 messaging protocols via a single, network-agnostic point of connectivity.
The system utilizes the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) to facilitate the movement of tokenized value across disparate blockchain networks. End-to-end payment workflows, transaction routing, and operational state changes are managed through the Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE), which functions as the underlying execution framework.
The partnership targets the friction points traditionally associated with legacy cross-border settlement, including multi-intermediary routing, delayed reconciliation times, and limited multi-network compatibility.
Institutional and government on-chain expansion
The partnership with Bottomline represents a broader movement of institutional financial systems and government operations adopting decentralized network infrastructure for data verification and asset transfer.
On September 2, the Wyoming Stable Token Commission selected Chainlink Proof of Reserve to publish automated audit data for FRNT, the state’s dollar-pegged stablecoin. The integration operates alongside FRNT’s existing reserve accounting frameworks and third-party examination processes. The implementation addresses industry-wide requirements regarding continuous auditing, token supply verification, and reserve collateral ratios.
Concurrently, the U.S. Department of Commerce initiated a project on September 1 to publish official economic indicators directly onto ten public blockchain networks utilizing Chainlink oracle infrastructure. The program establishes real-time data feeds sourced from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).
The automated system transmits three macroeconomic measures to smart contracts: real Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index, and Real Final Sales to Private Domestic Purchasers.
Across the supported blockchain environments, a total of six dedicated data feeds have been deployed to make primary economic statistics programmatically accessible to decentralized applications and automated financial protocols as new official figures are published.
