Hyperliquid’s HYPE token is trading near $81.25 on Saturday (12:20 PM UTC), August 29, after slipping about 2.3% over the past 24 hours. The pullback follows a record high of roughly $86.71—marked on Aug 27, 2026, the same day as the project’s largest scheduled token unlock since launch.
Despite the dip, HYPE remains in the top-10 crypto assets by market value, with a capitalization near $18.1 billion, 24-hour volume above $1.25 billion—as per CoinGecko data.
The move is being watched closely because it tests whether a powerful mix of buybacks, treasury buying, and U.S. regulatory headlines can absorb fresh supply.
Hyperliquid is a performance-focused Layer 1 built around an on-chain perpetual futures exchange, with a growing HyperEVM environment and expanding product set that now includes prediction markets and tokenized assets.
Unlock day meets a fresh all-time high
Today’s release is the market’s immediate pressure point. About 14.18 million HYPE tokens—worth roughly $1.2 billion at current prices—are scheduled to enter circulation, as per Tokenomist data. That is about 1.4% of the 1 billion max supply and close to 2.7% of market cap. According to its tokenomics, Nearly half of the batch is allocated to insiders and early investors, with a similar share going to the community and a smaller slice to the Hyper Foundation.
HYPE set its latest high only two days earlier, then faded as traders priced in the unlock and a softer broader crypto tape. Daily ranges this week have been wide, with lows near $79 and highs above $86.
That volatility is consistent with HYPE’s 2026 run: the token is still up sharply on a one-month and year-to-date basis even after Friday’s decline. The question for Monday is whether unlocked tokens hit the market immediately or stay staked and held.
Treasuries, ETFs, and a new buyback engine
The supply event is colliding with unusually strong institutional demand. Nasdaq-listed Hyperliquid Strategies has expanded its HYPE treasury to about 29.3 million tokens after raising hundreds of millions of dollars in equity this year. That single holder now represents a meaningful share of circulating supply and has framed HYPE as a corporate treasury asset rather than a purely speculative token.
Spot products have added another bid. Reports this week said Bitwise’s Hyperliquid ETF has been staking a large HYPE position, while on-chain data showed sizable withdrawals from exchanges into staking.
Separately, Hyperliquid activated its AQAv2 framework, which routes most yield from billions of dollars in USDC reserves into programmatic HYPE buybacks and burns, with the first execution window set for early October.
Hyperliquid data shows that millions in protocol fees already flow into an Assistance Fund that permanently removes tokens from supply. Together, those mechanisms are designed to offset unlocks over time, even if they cannot cancel a single large release in one session.
Washington headlines and the road after August
Regulatory noise has been as important as on-chain mechanics. President Trump said CFTC Chair Michael Selig was working on a compliant U.S. path for Hyperliquid, comments that helped push the token through prior resistance.
The Hyperliquid Policy Center has also pressed the CFTC and SEC to treat on-chain perpetuals as a risk-management tool and to consider frameworks for pre-IPO and commodity-linked contracts. No U.S. retail launch has been approved, but the political signal has widened the buyer base.
Product expansion is also running in parallel. The protocol’s HIP-3 and HIP-4 upgrades have opened custom markets and permissionless outcome markets, while HyperEVM activity has produced record daily fee days during meme-trading bursts.
Hyperliquid already commands a large share of decentralized perps open interest; the next test is whether that trading engine can keep generating buyback fuel after unlocks and after the first wave of treasury accumulation.
For now, HYPE sits a few percent below its new high with a large supply event landing on a Saturday. The near-term tape will be decided by whether unlocked tokens are sold, staked, or absorbed by treasuries and ETFs.
