Marqeta, the card issuing platform, and crypto exchange Coinbase have expanded their partnership to help businesses offer stablecoin-backed payment cards that customers can use at merchants worldwide.
According to an official release published on October 16, 2026, the agreement combines Coinbase’s digital asset services with Marqeta’s card technology to make stablecoins more accessible for everyday payments. The partnership is designed to allow businesses inside and outside the cryptocurrency industry to offer cards linked to stablecoin balances.
Instead of keeping their digital money only on a cryptocurrency platform, users will be able to spend it when paying for goods and services at merchants that accept the cards. Businesses will also be able to fund their card programs outside normal banking hours.
Coinbase to manage stablecoin balances
The companies will handle separate parts of the payment process. Coinbase will provide stablecoin custody and manage conversion into traditional money, such as U.S. dollars, when needed.
Its Base blockchain will support transaction movement and settlement. The companies said the infrastructure is intended to support faster and lower-cost payments.
Marqeta to handle cards and payments
Marqeta will provide the technology for issuing cards and processing payments. It will also manage relationships with banks and card networks, allowing businesses to connect stablecoin services with existing payment systems. The arrangement is intended to let businesses offer stablecoin-backed cards without building the entire payment system themselves.
“Coinbase is enabling businesses to move money with the speed and efficiency they require,” said Alec Lovett, Coinbase’s head of infrastructure products. He said the partnership would combine Coinbase’s stablecoin payment services with Marqeta’s card issuance and processing technology to support real-time global transactions.
Coinbase expands stablecoin use beyond trading
Coinbase has also entered partnerships with other companies to expand stablecoin use across financial services.
In September, Citi expanded its relationship with Coinbase to help corporate customers accept stablecoin payments through Citi’s merchant-processing services. Under the agreement shared on September 28, Citi will maintain its customer relationships, while Coinbase will provide the digital technology needed to move and convert the tokens.
Coinbase also partnered with Moov, a payment infrastructure provider. The agreement connects Coinbase’s Payments API and custodial wallet technology with Moov’s platform. Planned uses include customer payments, merchant acceptance, settlement, business payouts, and real-time funding.
The Marqeta partnership adds card-based spending to Coinbase’s broader stablecoin initiatives. While the Citi and Moov arrangements focus on payment acceptance and financial infrastructure, the Marqeta agreement is aimed at connecting stablecoin balances with cards that customers can use for purchases at participating merchants.
