An anonymous group has airdropped 21,000 digital inscriptions to the Bitcoin Ordinals community, sparking excitement but also scepticism.
According to the report, the inscriptions were dubbed “RSICs” and came with a backstory about a “technological arms race” and promises of access to an upcoming “runes protocol.” However, the airdrop appears unrelated to RUNES, a concept for Bitcoin art minting designed by Ordinals creator Casey Rodarmor.
While some welcomed the novel promotion as fun for the community, others cautioned buyers to be wary. Critics noted the lack of confirmed connection to Rodarmor and that the runes protocol is still months away from launch.
They accused the Mystery group of misleading marketing, essentially selling “rune” NFTs before any real runes existed on Bitcoin.
Nonetheless, over 33 BTC of inscription trading volume indicates significant interest in the community. The anonymous creators maintained it was just for fun and experiments.
For now, the motivations behind the elaborate inscription airdrop remain unknown, keeping Bitcoin art enthusiasts guessing.
