A gynecologist in Mumbai, India, lost more than $132,000 in a cryptocurrency scam after being lured by a person claiming to be a crypto expert named Melissa Campbell. The doctor met Campbell on Facebook, where she offered to help him with crypto investments, according to a report by The Times of India.
The doctor trusted Campbell and shared personal information, including his mobile number, email, and driver’s license. He followed her advice and created a crypto trading account, invested over Rs 1.1 Cr ($132k) in cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT.
As time went on, Campbell persuaded the doctor to transfer his cryptocurrencies to another wallet, promising bigger profits through trading. When the doctor wanted to withdraw his supposed profits, Campbell told him he needed to pay taxes and commissions.
Desperate to access his profits, the doctor borrowed $33,636 from a friend to cover these costs. However, Campbell continued to demand more money, raising the doctor’s suspicions.
Almost a year later, the doctor reported the scam to the police, and an investigation is underway for cheating under the Indian Penal Code.
