Hunter Biden is launching $LAPTOP on September 9, turning the political controversy over his laptop into a meme coin that directly references President Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency venture. The Crypto Times previously reported that the project would launch on Base with a one-billion-token supply, part of the distribution directed to people who lost money on $TRUMP, and burn conditions tied to political and market milestones. Ahead of trading, Biden published a lengthy personal statement on X explaining why he is doing it.
‘Resilience, redemption, and recovery’
Biden’s statement opened with a jab at his critics — “here I am… seven years sober, and with a lot to say” — he reframed the laptop, which he left at a Delaware repair shop in 2019 and which became a political flashpoint before the 2020 election, as “now a symbol of resilience, redemption, and recovery.”
He leaned into that defiance throughout. “I’ve spent way too long being a story other people told,” he wrote, arguing that the years of attacks had backfired: “the only thing they burned was my shame,” and “they think they killed me, but instead, all they did was make me fearless.” He cast the token itself as an act of reclamation, distilling the message into the line the project has adopted as its tagline: “They turned laptop into a weapon. I turned it into a token.” His statement signs off, “$LAPTOP. Because the Truth Matters.”
Crucially, Biden also distanced the project from a conventional investment pitch. Buyers, he wrote, “should not expect me or anyone else to make this token more valuable for you,” framing $LAPTOP as being “about saying something” rather than owning something and asking, “how do we help each other and our country get back up?” As detailed below, that stance is consistent with the project’s own risk disclosures.
A direct shot at Trump’s $TRUMP
The statement is also pointedly adversarial toward the president’s meme coin. Biden characterized $TRUMP as a “grift,” writing that “Trump has broken trust in everything he’s ever touched” and that “his token was no exception.” He said “nearly one million wallets have collectively lost ~$3.8B” on it, and framed his own airdrop, which includes wallets that lost money on $TRUMP, as a pointed contrast, offering tokens to “people that lost money on the $TRUMP grift.”
These are Biden’s characterizations and should not be presented as established findings; the loss figure, too, is his. The Crypto Times takes no side in the dispute and notes the framing cuts both ways — critics have observed that Biden is launching a speculative token of the kind he criticizes. What is independently verifiable is that the $TRUMP token trades roughly 97% below its January 2025 peak, a decline The Crypto Times has tracked, and that the airdrop’s design makes the rivalry with $TRUMP explicit.
$LAPTOP token details
The official project identifies $LAPTOP as an ERC-20 token on Base with a fixed supply of one billion tokens; The Crypto Times has published a full breakdown of the structure. According to the project’s website, the Base contract address is 0xB095274743941e953c746F9C228DA9c18Bb6ec29, and the published allocation is:
- Day-1 airdrop: 10%
- Future airdrop: 10%
- Liquidity: 10%
- Foundation treasury: 5%
- Founders: 30%
- Predictions: 30%
- Charity: 5%
The project states that 35% of the supply, i.e. 350 million tokens, is unlocked at the token generation event, with the full supply unlocking over 36 months. Its MiCA-style whitepaper lists September 9, 2026 as the starting date for admission to trading and states that it “has not been approved by any competent authority in any Member State of the European Union.”
The prediction burns run on Polymarket
A distinctive feature underpins Biden’s statement that 30% of supply is tied to a “pre-programmed mechanism.” According to the official website, those tokens are attached to 30 real-world outcomes resolved through live markets on the prediction platform Polymarket, each carrying a set share of supply. When a listed prediction resolves “yes,” the corresponding tokens are permanently burned; when it resolves “no,” they are donated to charity on the vesting schedule. Biden added that an additional 50 million tokens will go to charity “no matter what.”
The markets are heavily political, including whether Democrats win the 2026 House and Senate, whether a Democrat wins the 2028 presidential election, and whether President Trump is impeached, alongside crypto questions such as whether Bitcoin sets a new all-time high and whether $LAPTOP’s fully diluted valuation surpasses that of $TRUMP.
Copycat LAPTOP tokens emerged before launch
The launch was preceded by trading in unofficial tokens using the LAPTOP name and ticker. At least 14 distinct LAPTOP-branded tokens appeared across Robinhood Chain, Solana, TON and BNB Chain ahead of the official launch, trading roughly $6.9 million in combined volume — none of them the real project. Because the official project publishes a specific Base contract address, the ticker alone is not sufficient to identify the genuine token; buyers relying on the name or symbol risk sending funds to an impersonation.
Launch and disclosures
The whitepaper lists September 9, 2026 as the start of admission to trading but does not specify an exact hour, and the project’s disclosures are unusually direct about the risks. The official website describes $LAPTOP as “a memecoin created for entertainment and community participation” that “does not represent or confer any equity, ownership, or other economic interest,” and warns that “prices can fall to zero.” The whitepaper adds that the token has no inherent utility or value, no price floor, buyback or redemption right, and that holders could lose their entire investment.
Set against the record of political meme coins — the $TRUMP token being the immediate example — Biden’s warning that no one should expect the token’s value to be supported is, in effect, consistent with those formal disclosures. The project also says its smart contract was audited by the firm Hacken.
The caveats
A few points frame the story. Biden is a co-founder, not the token’s legal issuer; a British Virgin Islands entity, Phoenix Veritas Ventures Ltd, holds that role. The MiCA-style whitepaper is self-certified rather than regulator-approved. His statements about Trump are his own characterizations. And $LAPTOP remains a purely speculative instrument. The Crypto Times is reporting Biden’s statement and the launch; nothing here is a recommendation to buy, and the risks noted are drawn from the project’s own disclosures.
