Brazilian Federal Police have dismantled an alleged transnational drug trafficking and money laundering network accused of shipping around 6.5 metric tons of cocaine to Europe while funneling billions of Brazilian reals through cryptocurrencies, shell companies, and high-end luxury assets.
The law enforcement action, dubbed Operation Commodity, was launched on July 23 across four states: São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, and Espírito Santo. Agents executed 13 preventive detention warrants and 44 search-and-seizure operations targeting key logistics and financial operators. As part of the raid, a Brazilian federal court sanctioned the freezing of up to R$1 billion ($197 million USD) in bank accounts, real estate, and financial assets linked to the syndicate.
Hidden cargo and maritime logistics
According to investigators, the group operated an extensive logistics network stretching across South America, Europe, and Asia, to move bulk narcotics via maritime shipping routes.
Since 2021, the group successfully dispatched an estimated 6.5 metric tons of cocaine, primarily through major commercial ports like Rio de Janeiro and Santos. To bypass customs scanners and port inspection protocols, the illicit cargo was concealed inside commercial shipments of coffee, cement, and mortar, or altered using specialized chemical compounds to mask the drug’s composition during transit.
Investigators also confirmed the group maintained operational and supply-chain partnerships with Brazil’s dominant criminal factions: the First Capital Command (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV).
The laundering rail and arrests
Authorities say the organization moved billions of Brazilian reais through a combination of shell companies, cryptocurrencies, luxury goods, and real estate to hide the origin of illicit funds. While investigators have not disclosed which cryptocurrencies were involved, they described digital assets as one of several tools allegedly used to conceal proceeds from drug trafficking.
The suspects are expected to face charges including participation in a transnational criminal organization, international drug trafficking, and money laundering. Officials said additional charges could be added as the investigation progresses.
During the execution of the warrants on July 23, one key target, identified by authorities as Rildo dos Reis Cerqueira (“R7”), opened fire on federal officers at a waterfront luxury residence in Igaratá, São Paulo. Cerqueira was wounded during the exchange of gunfire, received emergency medical treatment, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. No federal officers were injured in the engagement.
The Brazilian Federal Police confirmed that financial forensics and evidence analysis remain ongoing, with further asset seizures and international extraditions anticipated as the investigation advances.
