Zcash (ZEC) Price Retraces From $1,200 Highs in Sharp Two-Day Slide

ZEC falls toward $1,100 and the rising 200-hour average after clearing $1,200, as Grayscale’s ZCSH lists on NYSE Arca and Ironwood reshapes shielded-supply rules.

Zcash’s native token, ZEC, has climbed sharply over the past year and recently traded above the $1,200 mark for the first time since late 2016, placing the decade-old privacy network among the larger digital assets by market value.

The move has coincided with two documented developments: the conversion of a long-standing investment trust into a listed exchange-traded product and a mainnet upgrade that changed how shielded balances can be audited.

ZEC price action remains volatile; after printing multi-year highs near $1,200–$1,290 in early September, ZEC pulled back toward about $1,100 on September 11—as per CoinGecko data.

The year-to-date (YTD) data from TradingView shows that ZEC is trading near $1,103 (as of 6:53 AM UTC, September 11) after a steep pullback from the early-September peak of just under $1,300.

Ironwood upgrade activated at block 3,428,143 (July 28 2026), restricting Orchard pool exits via a turnstile mechanism.
Grayscale’s Zcash ETF launched on NYSE Arca 8/25/2026, charging 2.5% fee and holding 628.3 M USD in ZEC.
ZEC fell below 20‑, 50‑, 100‑period EMAs, now testing 200‑hour average near $1,099, indicating potential deeper retracement.

ZEC price has fallen below the 20-, 50- and 100-period exponential moving averages, which sit at about $1,123, $1,162 and $1,158, and is now testing the rising 200-period average near $1,099. That 200-hour line has tracked the advance since late August and is the first longer-horizon support visible after the break of the short-term averages.

The path on the chart is a grind higher through the $800s, a vertical lift through $1,000 on September 3–4, a second push into the mid-$1,200s around September 9, then a sharp two-day decline that erased much of that last leg.

Momentum has cooled with the drop. The 14-period RSI is at 38.57 after touching about 29, with its signal line at 29.42, a reading consistent with a short-term oversold bounce rather than a confirmed trend reversal. RSI had spent much of the rally in or near overbought territory above 70; the slide below 30 on September 10–11 marks the weakest hourly momentum since before the September 3 breakout.

A hold above the 200-hour average near $1,099 would keep the broader uptrend structure intact on this timeframe; a decisive hourly close beneath it would put the August–September advance at greater risk of a deeper retracement toward the $950–$1,000 zone that launched the latest impulse. The chart shows a pause after an extended run, not a finished verdict on direction.

The Zcash ETF and Ironwood Upgrade

The price rally in ZEC was largely fueled by two major catalysts; Grayscale’s Zcash ETF conversion and the much anticipated Ironwood upgrade on the network.

On August 25, 2026, shares of The Zcash ETF began trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker ZCSH. The product page identifies the listing date as 08/25/2026, a 2.50% management fee, and NYSE Arca as the primary market. Grayscale’s product roster lists the same vehicle as a single-asset ETP.

As of September 10, 2026, the fund site reported assets under management of $628.3 million and 6,979,300 shares outstanding. The product holds ZEC rather than executing shielded transfers for shareholders.

A separate thread is technical. In May 2026 a soundness issue was identified in the Orchard shielded pool. Ecosystem teams proposed a new pool. Shielded Labs described Ironwood as a network upgrade meant to let users independently check circulating supply after the Orchard finding. The specification is ZIP 258. Community documentation states Ironwood activated at block 3,428,143 on July 28, 2026 UTC as NU6.3. After activation, the prior Orchard pool was restricted; funds leaving it must pass a turnstile so that no more ZEC can exit than legitimately entered. Zcash Open Development Lab described the pool as using a corrected Orchard circuit with added review and formal verification work.

The upgrade does not prove that counterfeiting never occurred before the patch. It is designed so that any invalid value, if it existed, could not keep circulating through the new pool. Migration is a user and wallet process, not an automatic rebase of every balance.

Grayscale’s August research cited rising use of shielding and, as of mid-July 2026, shielded supply near 4.2 million ZEC, about a quarter of circulating coins at that time. Later market commentary often cited a figure near 30%; those later tallies come from on-chain dashboards rather than a single issuer filing and should be treated as evolving measurements.

Taken together, the listed ETP and the Ironwood rules change who can buy exposure and how supply integrity is argued on-chain.

Traders on Zcash’s Further Movement

Traders split on whether the drop from the $1,200 area is a pause or the start of a deeper reversal. On a four-hour chart, Eric Van Tassel (@XRPathologist) argued ZEC was forming a possible “M” or double-top, with the neckline at the swing low between the two September peaks near $1,250–$1,280. He said a measured move would be taken from the midpoint of those highs down to the neckline and, only if price breaks and confirms below that line, projected the same distance lower toward a target zone around $940–$980; he stressed that without a confirmed neckline break the pattern is not valid.

Team LAMBO Charts (@TehLamboXcharts) took the opposite read, saying the climb from the $800s through $900, $1,000, $1,150 and $1,200+ has repeatedly produced “this is the top” selloffs that were later bought, and that a pullback should not be treated as a trend change until the breakout structure itself fails—an earlier note from the same account had framed $1,500 as a first target after a pennant breakout above $1,000. Those are individual technical views, not settled outcomes; as of the hourly tape on September 11, price was still working near $1,100 after losing the short-term averages.

For now, Zcash’s September tape leaves the story unfinished. The latest pullback is why some chart readers now watch a possible double-top and a measured move toward the mid-$900s if a neckline fails, while others treat the same dip as another pause inside a still-intact breakout.

Though neither reading is confirmed by price alone. The listed product, the new pool rules, and the hourly structure are facts on the record; whether $1,100 holds, and whether listed demand and shielded balances keep supporting the token, will be decided in the market, not in a single session.
