Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ: MSTR) ended the period of August 25–28, 2026, with a sharp Friday decline of more than 7% after briefly reaching its highest level in three months.

The Bitcoin treasury company closed Friday at $127.31, down $10.09 (7.34%) from Thursday’s close. The session high of $135.97 failed to hold as sellers emerged after the prior day’s breakout.

Data from TradingView shows that Thursday’s surge had taken the stock to $137.40, with an intraday peak of $139.78—the first close above $135 since early June and the highest print in roughly 12 weeks.

That move capped a rapid rebound from mid-August levels near $92–$100 and amplified Bitcoin’s climb toward $80,000. Friday’s reversal therefore stood in contrast to the broader weekly strength even as it erased a sizable portion of Thursday’s gains.

Market data further reveals that volume stayed heavy on both days. Thursday saw more than 44 million shares change hands; Friday still recorded over 31 million. The price action left MSTR well above its 20-day and 50-day moving averages but still below the 200-day average near $142. Relative strength readings had entered overbought territory after the multi-day run, a condition that often precedes short-term digestion.

Profit-Taking Follows Breakout and Share Sales

Investors locked in gains after one of the stock’s strongest short-term advances of 2026. From the August 18 close of $92.52, MSTR had climbed roughly 37% into Thursday’s high. Bitcoin’s concurrent rebound from the mid-$60,000s supplied the primary catalyst, given Strategy’s role as a leveraged equity proxy for the cryptocurrency. The company holds approximately 840,447 bitcoin as per its latest disclosures. When bitcoin rose, the implied value of those holdings improved and sentiment toward the equity followed.

A second factor was the recent capital raise. Between August 17 and August 23, Strategy sold 18.26 million Class A shares through its at-the-market program and generated about $2.01 billion in proceeds. Management used a portion of the cash to build dollar reserves and repurchase some preferred stock rather than immediately adding more bitcoin.

The issuance increased the share count and created an overhang that traders cited as Friday selling accelerated. Bitcoin itself retreated roughly 3% on Friday, as per CoinGecko data, removing the immediate tailwind that had powered Thursday’s session.

The combination produced a classic “buy the rumor, sell the news” pattern around the breakout. Shares that had closed above a key psychological level on Thursday opened lower Friday and never recovered. Intraday support near $126 held, preventing a deeper breakdown, yet the inability to sustain prices above $135 left the breakout unconfirmed.

Treasury Model Still Tied to Bitcoin Volatility

Strategy’s business remains dominated by its bitcoin position. The software operations generate modest revenue compared with the mark-to-market swings on the treasury. When bitcoin trades higher, unrealized gains appear on the balance sheet and the stock typically outperforms; the reverse occurs on pullbacks. Friday illustrated the latter.

Even after the August rebound, MSTR trades far below its 52-week high near $365 and its all-time peak above $470 reached in late 2024.

Management has adjusted its playbook this year. After earlier periods of aggressive bitcoin accumulation funded by equity and convertible issuance, the company paused new purchases for several weeks, sold modest amounts of bitcoin earlier in the summer, and focused on liquidity and preferred-stock support.

The August ATM raise continued that shift toward cash-building. Critics like Peter Schiff argue the model remains vulnerable to prolonged bitcoin weakness and ongoing dilution. Supporters note that the large bitcoin reserve still offers asymmetric upside if the cryptocurrency resumes its longer-term advance.

Technically, the next tests are clear. A sustained close back above $135–$140 would reassert the breakout. A drop below the mid-$117 area would question the August recovery. For now, Friday’s 7% decline simply marked the first notable pause after a five-session winning streak that had lifted the stock more than 30 percent in a matter of days.

The week therefore delivered both a multi-month high and a reminder of MSTR’s volatility. Shares finished Friday lower, yet they remained substantially above June lows near $82. Traders will watch bitcoin’s next move and any further comments on capital allocation as the stock attempts to digest the recent run.
