IREN Stock Drops Over 8% in 24 Hours as AI Rally Fades

Key Highlights

  • IREN shares fell over 8% to $31.05, extending losses despite recent AI cloud contract announcements.
  • The stock is down 32% over the past month as investors digest its ambitious AI expansion plans.
  • Analysts remain bullish with a $75.18 average price target, but execution risks and crypto market volatility continue to pressure sentiment.

Bitcoin mining company IREN Limited (NASDAQ: IREN) saw its shares drop more than 8% in a single session, trading near $31.05 after opening the day at $34.08 on Wednesday.

According to Google Finance data, the sharp decline erased a significant portion of the gains the stock had posted just over a week earlier and left the shares trading below recent highs.

Why IREN stock is down

The sell-off follows a sharp rally earlier this month. On July 20, IREN surged nearly 17% in premarket trading to $39.22, lifting its market capitalization above $12 billion. The rally was driven by the company’s announcement of $2.8 billion in new multi-year contracts to supply AI cloud services to artificial-intelligence developers. However, the stock has since given back much of those gains as investors took profits following the rapid advance.

At the same time, management raised its target for annualized AI cloud revenue by the end of 2026 to more than $4 billion, up from a previous goal of $3.7 billion. Roughly 85% of the new revenue target is already underpinned by signed contracts, giving investors greater visibility into the company’s shift from Bitcoin mining toward high-performance computing and AI infrastructure.

The subsequent pullback also appears largely technical. After the rapid advance, the stock entered a consolidation phase as early buyers locked in profits and the market digested the ambitious guidance.

Analysts remain optimistic despite drop

Intraday charts show the price sliding steadily from the mid-$34 range toward the $31 level, with volume elevated but not at extreme panic levels.

Over the past month, the shares have fallen more than 32%, and the five-day decline exceeds 22%, reflecting the volatility surrounding the company’s strategic transition.

Twelve analysts covering the stock rate it a Buy on average, with only one Sell recommendation. The consensus 12-month price target stands at $75.18, more than double the current share price, while the highest target reaches $100. The company’s market capitalization still sits near $11.1 billion, supported by a 52-week range that stretches from $14.72 to $76.87.

Trailing price-to-earnings ratios have fluctuated between the low 40s and above 70 depending on the data source, and the stock carries a high beta of approximately 4.28, underscoring its sensitivity to both crypto market swings and broader technology sentiment.

IREN shows vulnerability to broader risk-off

IREN’s latest slide exposes the fragility of a narrative built on ambitious AI guidance and high multiples. After a brief 17% spike on contract announcement, the stock has given back most of those gains, falling more than 8% in a day and over 30% in a month.

Its elevated valuation, high beta of around 4.3, and reliance on future earnings leave limited room for execution missteps. Converting Bitcoin mining infrastructure into AI cloud capacity is capital-intensive and operationally complex, and any delays in executing the $2.8 billion contracts or achieving the company’s $4 billion annualized revenue target could weigh further on investor sentiment.

With Bitcoin itself still under pressure and institutional flows selective, IREN remains vulnerable to both crypto sentiment and broader risk-off moves. The analyst optimism looks increasingly disconnected from the price action.
