IREN Stock Drops Over 5% to $38.38 Today After Early Gains

Key Highlights

  • IREN shares dropped more than 5% to around $38.38 after giving up early session gains.
  • The pullback followed a recent AI-driven rally fueled by $2.8 billion in cloud services contracts.
  • Investors remain cautious over execution risks, capital needs, and the company’s exposure to crypto market volatility.

IREN Ltd (NASDAQ: IREN) shares reversed course sharply on Friday, dropping more than 5% to trade around $38.38 after showing early resilience. The stock opened near $40.02 and reached an intraday high of $40.23 before selling pressure intensified, closing the session well below the previous day’s close of $40.58.

According to Google Finance data, the decline comes despite a strong five-day performance where the stock gained 5.63%. However, longer-term momentum remains challenged, with the shares down approximately 23.48% over the past month amid broader capital constraints and crypto market headwinds.

Earlier AI-driven surge

Earlier this week, IREN captured investor attention when it surged nearly 17% in premarket trading on Monday. Shares climbed to $39.22 from the previous week’s low below $33, pushing the market capitalization to around $12.11 billion.

The rally was fueled by the company’s announcement of $2.8 billion in new multi-year AI cloud services contracts. IREN also raised its annualized AI Cloud revenue target for the end of 2026 to more than $4 billion, up from the prior $3.7 billion goal.

According to the company, roughly 85% of the new target is already backed by signed contracts, signaling strong visibility into future growth. This AI infrastructure push initially excited investors, positioning IREN as more than just a Bitcoin mining operation.

AI momentum likely fading

However, that AI-driven enthusiasm appears to have started fading quickly. Today’s more than 5% decline suggests profit-taking and renewed concerns over execution risks, capital requirements, and the volatile nature of both crypto and AI sectors.

Despite the positive contract news, broader market pressures and sector-specific challenges have weighed on the stock. Analyst sentiment remains largely optimistic. Based on 12 analysts, eight rate IREN a “Buy,” three “Hold,” and one “Sell.”

The average 12-month price target stands at $75.18, implying potential upside of over 95% from current levels, with the highest target reaching $100.

IREN faces significant headwinds

IREN currently has 357.38 million shares outstanding, a market cap of approximately $13.76 billion, and an average daily volume of 41.94 million shares. The stock carries a high beta of 4.27, underscoring its elevated volatility tied to both cryptocurrency prices and technology sector sentiment.

Despite optimistic analyst targets, IREN faces significant headwinds that could pressure the stock further. The sharp monthly decline of over 23% signals weakening investor conviction, while heavy reliance on volatile crypto revenues adds another layer of risk.

Today’s 5% drop may mark the beginning of a broader correction as the initial excitement over AI contracts fades against operational realities. Investors should exercise caution, as execution misses or a renewed crypto downturn could drive the stock back toward its 52-week lows near $14.72.
