Key Highlights

  • Robinhood confirmed CEO Vlad Tenev’s X account was compromised and used to promote a fraudulent memecoin.
  • The company said the unauthorized post was removed and it is working with X to restore the account.
  • Robinhood has not disclosed how the account was compromised or whether other systems were affected.

Robinhood has confirmed that the X account of CEO Vlad Tenev was compromised after hackers used it to promote a fraudulent memecoin to the platform’s millions of followers.

In an X post, the company disclosed the incident and warned users that the post was unauthorized. “Heads up: Our CEO Vlad Tenev’s X account was compromised and posted a fake promotion for a meme coin,” the team wrote.

Robinhood added that it is working with X to regain control of the account and confirmed that the fraudulent post has been removed. The company has not disclosed how the compromise occurred or whether any other systems were affected.

Hackers used Tenev’s account to push a fake token

The fake memecoin promotion contrasts with Robinhood’s recent messaging around blockchain technology.

Earlier this month, Tenev said tokenized real-world assets (RWAs), not speculative memecoins, would become the next major growth area for crypto markets.

Speaking after Robinhood unveiled Stock Tokens and its new Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain, Tenev said blockchain infrastructure should be used to bring traditional financial assets onchain, making investing more accessible and efficient.

Robinhood has been expanding its tokenization strategy by developing blockchain-based financial products that include tokenized equities and other regulated assets, positioning itself as a broader digital financial services platform rather than a memecoin-focused company.

Latest in a string of crypto X account hacks

The Robinhood incident is the latest example of verified social media accounts linked to major crypto companies and executives being compromised.

Earlier this year, Arbitrum DAO’s official governance X account was compromised, prompting the project to issue an urgent warning advising users not to interact with any links shared from the account until control was restored.

Similar incidents have targeted multiple high-profile crypto organizations, with attackers exploiting trusted accounts to promote fake token launches, phishing campaigns, and fraudulent giveaways before companies regain access.

Security researchers have noted that such attacks typically exploit the credibility of verified accounts rather than vulnerabilities in blockchain networks themselves, making public warnings essential to limit investor losses.

Robinhood continues blockchain expansion

While the social media breach temporarily disrupted Robinhood’s public communications, there is no indication that it affected the company’s broader blockchain initiatives.

Robinhood continues to invest in tokenized financial products, blockchain infrastructure, and digital asset services. Tenev has repeatedly stated that regulated tokenized assets, rather than speculative memecoins, represent a key area of development for digital finance.
