Michael Saylor’s Strategy “Strategically” Halts Bitcoin Buys, Adds $225M to USD Reserves

Strategy Inc. (formerly MicroStrategy, Nasdaq: MSTR), the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holder, announced in its latest weekly disclosure that it made no Bitcoin purchases for the week ending July 19, 2026. Instead, the company added $225 million to its USD reserve, bringing the total to $3.2 billion.

The company’s Bitcoin holdings remained unchanged at 843,775 BTC, valued at approximately $54.6 billion at prevailing prices around $64,780 per coin. This move continues Strategy’s balanced treasury approach under Chairman Michael Saylor, prioritizing liquidity alongside its core Bitcoin strategy.

According to the latest 8–K filing, the reserve increase was funded through at-the-market (ATM) sales of approximately 2.73 million shares of Class A common stock. This follows a pattern of using equity proceeds flexibly, sometimes for Bitcoin acquisitions and other times for reserve building.

These disclosures provide granular visibility into Bitcoin activity, capital raises, and reserve movements. For instance, Strategy sold roughly 4.8 million MSTR shares in a prior week for about $467 million, directing proceeds primarily to the USD reserve.

The ATM program continues to serve as a key funding mechanism, with substantial remaining capacity for future issuances. This approach allows the company to raise capital without immediate pressure on its Bitcoin holdings, supporting both operational needs and long-term treasury goals.

Evolution of Strategy’s Digital Credit Capital Framework and Bitcoin Holdings

Launched on June 29, 2026, the Digital Credit Capital Framework marks a significant evolution in Strategy’s financial architecture, shifting from pure accumulation toward sophisticated, multi-layered capital management while steadfastly preserving long-term Bitcoin exposure.

Its key components include a formal USD Reserve policy that mandates at least 12 months of coverage for preferred stock dividends and interest obligations (currently estimated at $1.76 billion annually), revised dividend policies for securities like STRC (increased to 12% effective July 1, 2026), authorization for up to $1 billion each in preferred securities and common stock repurchases, and a BTC Monetization Program permitting up to $1.25 billion in targeted Bitcoin sales.

The framework strengthens credit quality, enhances liquidity buffers, and provides structured tools to navigate market volatility without resorting to forced asset sales. It was designed to support the company’s various Digital Credit Securities (STRC, STRF, STRD, STRK) and improve overall balance sheet resilience.

Combined with the existing USD reserve, authorized BTC monetization capacity brings total liquidity coverage to approximately $3.8–4 billion equivalent in some scenarios, representing more than two years of current obligations under conservative assumptions.

Strategy’s Bitcoin position of 843,775 BTC, acquired at an average cost basis of roughly $75,476 per coin (total investment around $63.7 billion including fees and expenses), stands as one of the most substantial corporate treasuries globally. This equates to about 4% of Bitcoin’s fixed 21 million supply cap, positioning Strategy as a major market participant whose actions are closely watched by the broader crypto ecosystem. The company has cycled through aggressive accumulation phases — adding thousands of BTC in single weeks during favorable conditions — alongside periods of pause or selective monetization.

This hybrid model blends conviction-driven buying with prudent cash buffer expansion, mitigating downside risks during Bitcoin price corrections. Historically, Strategy began its Bitcoin journey in August 2020 with modest allocations, scaling dramatically through operating cash flows, equity raises, and debt instruments.

The transformation turned a legacy business intelligence software firm into a leading Bitcoin treasury vehicle, with MSTR shares functioning as a leveraged proxy for Bitcoin exposure. The current reserve build at $3.2 billion adds meaningful flexibility for opportunistic future purchases or other strategic deployments, reflecting lessons learned from years of navigating crypto market cycles.

Implications and Outlook for Corporate Bitcoin Adoption

Strategy’s latest $225 million reserve increase highlights its maturation into a sophisticated capital manager that balances deep conviction in Bitcoin as a superior store of value with pragmatic liquidity and risk management.

By growing the USD reserve to $3.2 billion, the company effectively hedges near-term macroeconomic uncertainties, interest rate fluctuations, and Bitcoin price volatility while keeping its massive holdings fully intact. This strategy reduces the likelihood of distressed sales during downturns and bolsters the credit profile of its preferred securities, potentially lowering future financing costs.

The broader playbook, combining ongoing equity issuance through ATM programs, disciplined reserve building, selective Bitcoin monetization when advantageous, and flexible policy tools. serves as a practical template for other public companies exploring Bitcoin treasury strategies.

As institutional and corporate adoption of Bitcoin accelerates, Strategy demonstrates how firms can integrate digital assets into their balance sheets without sacrificing operational stability or shareholder value creation.
