A high-profile crypto trader known as gud.hl has been wiped out after staking $5.2 million on Argentina winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The bet, placed primarily through prediction markets and tracked by Arkham Intelligence, was lost in full following Spain’s 1-0 victory in the final.
The position represented nearly the entirety of the trader’s profits from Hyperliquid, turning what had been a highly profitable run into a complete loss overnight.
The Scale of the Bet
Arkham data shows gud.hl spent weeks building the position, purchasing Argentina “Yes” shares at an average cost of about 11-12 cents each. As Argentina advanced through the tournament, the value of the position climbed sharply, making the trader one of the largest visible holders of Argentina shares on Polymarket.
Screenshots shared by Arkham show the position briefly generated millions of dollars in unrealized gains before the World Cup final. The wallet ranked among the platform’s biggest Argentina supporters heading into the championship match.
Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final, determining the result of the Polymarket contract. Once the final whistle blew, the market settled in favor of “No” shares, causing every Argentina “Yes” share to become worthless.
Prediction markets such as Polymarket allow users to buy and sell shares tied to real-world events. Winning shares settle at $1, while losing shares expire at $0. Because gud.hl backed only Argentina, the trader lost the entire position in a single settlement.
High-Stakes Gambling in Prediction Markets
This trade highlights the risks of concentrated positions in binary prediction markets, where a single event can be the difference between a payout and the total loss of a bet’s value. The World Cup bet cost the trader over $5 million, erasing massive profits he’d made trading Hyperliquid earlier in the year after Spain won the tournament.
The World Cup final also attracted significant crypto-related betting activity. Ahead of the match, rapper Drake revealed a $1.5 million USDT wager on Argentina through Stake, while Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino publicly reacted to the bet. Argentina’s run to the final also boosted trading in the ARG Fan Token, highlighting how major sporting events continue to drive activity across crypto betting and digital asset markets.
The trader’s decision to risk nearly all Hyperliquid-derived profits on a single binary outcome serves as a cautionary tale for participants in these increasingly popular on-chain betting venues.
