Metaplanet, a Japanese investment firm, announced the acquisition of 1,241 Bitcoin (BTC) with an average price of 14,848,061 yen per Bitcoin on May 12, 2025.
Metaplanet’s latest acquisition boosts its total Bitcoin holding to over 6,796 Bitcoin, with an average purchase price of 13,270,989 yen per Bitcoin. This acquisition positions Metaplnet as one of Asia’s largest publicly traded enterprises. The move is a watershed moment for Japan’s historically conservative financial sector, according to analysts, and it may inspire other institutions to do the same.
Previous acquisitions were of 555 BTC for $53.3 million last week, which boosted Metaplanet’s shares by 13%.
This acquisition is part of the company’s ongoing strategy to accumulate Bitcoin as a core treasury asset. This move has drawn comparisons to Strategy, known for its aggressive Bitcoin investment approach. The last purchase of Strategy was 1,895, for $180.3 million, with total holdings at 555,450.
