Cosmos Hub’a 4-Hour Blockchain Blackout Sparks Concerns

During the recent v17 upgrade, the Cosmos Hub experienced an outage due to a security vulnerability in the Liquid Staking Module. This module is crucial for validators on the Hub. However, Cosmos Hub has assured its community that the problem causing the outage has been addressed and the blockchain is back to producing blocks as usual.

To shed light on the incident and the measures taken to resolve it, Informal Systems and Hypha Cosmos will soon release a detailed post-mortem report. This report aims to provide a thorough understanding of what happened during the outage and the steps taken to fix it.

The Cosmos Hub is experiencing a temporary chain halt.

The teams at @informalinc and @HyphaDoesCosmos have identified a fix.
A coordinated upgrade will be conducted ASAP.

Updates will be shared shortly. Thank you for your patience.

The Cosmos Hub stands out as the pioneering blockchain within the Cosmos Network. It functions on a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, utilizing the ATOM coin. Through staking, network participants can secure their ATOM coins and earn rewards, thereby fostering the network’s stability and efficiency.

Beyond its role as a foundational element in the Cosmos Network, the Hub is renowned for its provision of tools and libraries tailored for the development of blockchain applications.

This is not the first time that Cosmos has suffered an outage because of the bug. Last month, it also fixed a security flaw in the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol.

In summary, while the recent outage may have caused concern, the prompt resolution by Cosmos Hub’s validators and the forthcoming post-mortem report demonstrate the network’s commitment to transparency, security, and ongoing improvement.

The recent outage experienced by the Cosmos Hub during the v17 upgrade, stemming from a security flaw in the Liquid Staking Module, highlights the inherent risks associated with complex blockchain systems. Despite assurances from Cosmos Hub regarding the issue’s resolution, questions linger about the network’s resilience and the efficacy of its security protocols. How will the forthcoming post-mortem report address these concerns and ensure the Hub’s continued stability?
