AssangeDAO, formed with a mission to restore the freedom of Julian Assange has shown its dedication with a fundraise of $ 11 million.
AssangeDAO was formed by cypherpunks, on the same day when their fellow member and WikiLeaks founder Jullian Assange was charged by the US Government. On 10th December 2021 U.S. government won its appeal of a British court ruling that barred Assange’s extradition to the US.
Shortly after Assange’s Brother Gabriel Shifton joined the Dao inspired by FreeRossDAO. The AssangeDAO now intends to raise capital to bid on Assange’s NFT. They have successfully raised over 3737 Ethereum in their venture thus far, and they are still counting. The current market value of Ethereum, it’s over $11 million.

Assange’s NFT is in collaboration with none other than the world’s most renowned and mysterious NFT artist Pak. Together Assange and Pak are about to launch an NFT collection ‘Censored’.
AssangeDao has many core contributors such as bitcoin Amir Taaki, McKenna, Rachel-Rose O’Leary, Fiskantes, and Silke Noa. Together they are the initial signers of Gnosis Safe multi-sig wallet that will be used by DAO to store NFT and Funds for now.
How AssangeDao plans to support Jullian
First of all, AssangeDao is raising funds to bid on the 1/1 NFT of Censored. Funds raised from the NFT sale will be used to help Assange’s legal defense and campaign to raise awareness about the free speech implications of his case.
Similar to Constitution Dao, anyone can donate with Ethererum to AssangeDAO via Juicebox and in return get $JUSTICE. Any other asset donated will be considered as a donation to the DAO’s treasury and will be governed by AssangeDAO.
There is no initial target for the Fundraise but If AssangeDAO wins the bid for the 1/1 NFT, it will be held by the DAO in a multisig. And in return contributors will be given JUSTICE tokens in proportion to their ETH contributions. These JUSTICE tokens will act as a governance token for the DAO.
WIth this contributors will then decide via governance voting what to do with the NFT and the future roadmap of the DAO.
If the DAO loses the auction for the NFT, the Gnosis Guild Zodiac Exit Module will be added to the Gnosis Safe by the Safe signers. The ETH in the Gnosis Safe will then be redeemable for $JUSTICE tokens. This module will only be added to the Safe if the auction for the NFT is lost, to provide a way for:
- The DAO to live on regardless of winning the auction.
- People can easily exit the DAO with all contributions they made if they only participated to obtain NFT.
Bitcoin core developer Amir Taki stated that “AssangeDAO is a line in the sand where DeFi takes a strategic step towards post-corporate democratic wealth, Cypherpunks around the world have heard Assange’s call, and have rallied to stand in defense of the original cypherpunk.”
