Thai immigration police have arrested a 37-year-old Chinese man in Bangkok who is wanted by Chinese authorities over alleged links to a transnational criminal network.
According to an October 17 report by Khaosod English, investigators said the network handled more than 500 million yuan in transactions, equivalent to approximately 2.485 billion baht.
The suspect allegedly handled cryptocurrency and foreign-currency exchanges for criminal groups through more than 133 accounts.
Police tracked the suspect to a property in Bangkok’s Saphan Sung district. He faces proceedings in Thailand over an immigration violation before authorities coordinate his return to China.
Suspect allegedly handled crypto and foreign-currency exchanges
Investigators alleged that the suspect handled cryptocurrency and foreign-currency exchanges for criminal groups through more than 133 accounts. They also said he arranged visas for members of transnational criminal networks linked to other money-laundering investigations.
In an October 17 post on X, Bangkok Post reported the arrest, citing allegations that the suspect managed mule accounts and arranged visas for members of transnational criminal groups.
Neither report identifies the cryptocurrencies involved or specifies which exchanges, wallets or blockchain networks were allegedly used. The reports also do not establish how much of the network’s total transaction volume was directly attributable to the suspect.
Police say suspect used forged documents to avoid detection
Thai police said the suspect allegedly used forged documents to report his residence, changed his vehicle’s registration plates and altered the colour of his car to avoid detection.
According to Khaosod English, his permission to stay in Thailand had expired about three years and eight months before his arrest.
The suspect was charged with overstaying under Section 81 of Thailand’s Immigration Act. He will face legal proceedings in Thailand before authorities coordinate his return to China.
The reports do not state that the suspect has been convicted of the alleged money-laundering offences.
Thailand considers Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs
On August 25, Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) considered a framework allowing regulated asset managers to launch exchange-traded funds tracking Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The proposed framework would allow passive crypto ETFs subject to requirements such as custody rules. The proposal represents a separate regulatory development involving investment products rather than an investigation into alleged financial crime.
Thailand investigated crypto operation
On June 25, Thailand was seeking Chinese businessman Wang Yicheng over an alleged illegal cryptocurrency mining operation valued at approximately $28 million.
The report said Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation had issued an arrest warrant for Wang following an investigation into electricity theft linked to cryptocurrency mining.
The available reports do not establish a connection between Wang and the suspect arrested in Bangkok.
On March 10, The Crypto Times reported that Thailand had frozen 10,000 crypto accounts under its “Speed Bump” system.
The system temporarily delays flagged transactions, giving exchanges and financial institutions additional time to investigate suspicious activity before funds move further.
The account freezes were a separate measure, with no reported link to the current case.
