NEAR Protocol has staged a sharp rally this autumn. NEAR was trading at $5.17 as of around 06:24 UTC on October 6, 2026, up roughly 128% over the past 30 days and about 4.2% against Bitcoin on the day, according to CoinGecko data. The token changed hands in a 24-hour range of $4.94 to $5.35 and carried a market capitalization of about $6.76 billion on 24-hour volume near $886 million.
The move has brought renewed attention to NEAR’s AI-and-chain-abstraction strategy, but several developments have converged behind the rally rather than a single headline catalyst.

What’s Driving the Rally
One of the most confidence-restoring developments came at the start of the month, when NEAR Intents recovered the entire $3.8 million stolen in an exploit. As The Crypto Times reported, NEAR Intents ended its exploit probe after the $3.8 million was returned. NEAR Intents General Manager Alex Shevchenko had set an October 4 deadline for the attacker to return the funds, and the full amount came back ahead of it, with recovery confirmed on October 2.
The recovered funds included roughly $2.95 million in Bitcoin and about $850,000 through other routes. Co-founder Illia Polosukhin credited NEAR’s SHIELD AI security layer and “aggressive detective work” for identifying the exploiter within 24 hours. The recovery helped remove an immediate overhang from the exploit, although it does not by itself establish a broader improvement in network security.
NEAR’s repositioning around artificial intelligence is another major part of the current narrative. Polosukhin is a co-author of the seminal “Attention Is All You Need” paper that introduced the Transformer architecture underpinning modern AI. NEAR has since increasingly positioned its blockchain as infrastructure for AI agents and machine-to-machine transactions.
The engine of ecosystem activity has been NEAR Intents, the project’s intent-based, chain-abstraction trading layer. DeFiLlama currently shows NEAR Intents with more than $4.5 billion in 30-day DEX volume, giving the AI narrative a product-activity component rather than leaving it entirely dependent on branding.
Momentum also built through September, when NEAR launched confidential perpetual futures. NEAR surged around 30% on the confidential perps launch in mid-September, marking an earlier leg of the move from around $2.
The rally has now run into TOKEN2049 Singapore, scheduled for October 7–8. The conference could provide another burst of visibility for NEAR, although event attention alone is not evidence of a change in fundamentals.
The Number Behind the Number
NEAR’s rally is occurring alongside substantial derivatives positioning. According to CoinGlass data, NEAR’s 24-hour futures volume was about $2.05 billion, more than five and a half times its 24-hour spot volume of roughly $367.5 million, while open interest sat near $1.59 billion, over four times that spot turnover.
Set against the network’s actual on-chain footprint, the contrast is starker still: open interest was more than six times NEAR’s DeFi total value locked (TVL) of about $240 million, according to DeFiLlama data, while NEAR’s $6.77 billion market capitalization was roughly 28 times that locked value.
That gap highlights how quickly the token’s market valuation has expanded relative to the capital currently represented in DeFi; though TVL does not capture trading activity routed through products such as NEAR Intents.
For traders, the implication is straightforward: a large derivatives market can accelerate both upside and downside moves if positioning becomes crowded, and a token trading well above the usage its on-chain metrics reflect can unwind quickly.
Keeping the Rally in Perspective
Despite the surge, NEAR remains roughly 74.7% below its all-time high of $20.44, as per CoinGecko historical data. The rebound has therefore recovered only a portion of the token’s previous-cycle losses. The gain of about 880% from its all-time low of $0.5268 is technically accurate but less useful as a valuation reference because it starts from a distressed trough.
NEAR also has no fixed maximum supply, making token issuance an important part of the long-term valuation equation. That could change at the margin if a recent governance proposal to reduce annual issuance from 2.5% toward 1.6% is approved.
Why It Matters
NEAR’s 128% monthly rally brings together several of crypto’s strongest current narratives: AI, chain abstraction, privacy-focused trading and renewed product activity. The recovery of the $3.8 million exploit proceeds has also removed a near-term concern, while TOKEN2049 could keep attention elevated.
But the next phase will be less about the size of the initial move and more about whether NEAR Intents and its broader AI strategy can sustain meaningful activity as the market excitement cools. The large derivatives market adds another variable, because crowded positioning can magnify a correction just as quickly as it can amplify a rally.
