Key Highlights
- U.S. headline CPI is expected to rise 0.4% month over month and 3.4% year over year in August, while core CPI is forecast at 0.2% monthly and 2.4% annually.
- Fed funds futures currently imply roughly a 71% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the September 15–16 meeting.
- Bitcoin was trading near $77,200 at around 06:20 UTC, after moving between approximately $76,671 and $78,521 over the previous 24 hours.
Bitcoin (BTC) is trading near $77,000 ahead of Friday’s U.S. Consumer Price Index report, which could provide the final major inflation signal before the Federal Reserve decides interest rates next week.
BTC was changing hands around $77,202 at approximately 06:20 UTC on September 11, according to CoinMarketCap. Bitcoin has traded between $76,670.90 and $78,520.97 over the previous 24 hours.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics will release its August CPI report at 12:30 UTC on Friday, equivalent to 8:30 a.m. ET. The release comes just five days before the Federal Reserve concludes its September 15–16 policy meeting.
For Bitcoin, the headline CPI number will matter, but the monthly core inflation reading could carry more weight as traders assess whether the Fed has enough evidence to raise interest rates.
What to Expect From U.S. CPI Today?
Economists surveyed by Reuters expect headline CPI to increase 0.4% month over month in August, accelerating sharply from the 0.1% increase recorded in July.
On an annual basis, consumer inflation is expected to remain unchanged at 3.4%.
Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, is expected to increase 0.2% month over month, matching July. Annual core inflation is forecast to slow to 2.4% from 2.5%.
| CPI Measure | July | August Forecast |
|---|---|---|
| Headline CPI MoM | 0.1% | 0.4% |
| Headline CPI YoY | 3.4% | 3.4% |
| Core CPI MoM | 0.2% | 0.2% |
| Core CPI YoY | 2.5% | 2.4% |
The expected acceleration in headline inflation is being driven partly by energy prices rather than a broad forecast increase across all consumer categories.
Average U.S. gasoline prices increased to $4.192 per gallon in August from $4.064 in July, according to Reuters. Food prices are also expected to have increased moderately, while rent, apparel and new-vehicle price growth may have slowed.
That makes the composition of Friday’s report important. A 0.4% headline reading accompanied by 0.2% core inflation would largely match what markets are already expecting.
Core CPI Could Decide September Fed Rate Expectations
The inflation report arrives with markets already leaning toward another Federal Reserve rate hike.
Fed funds futures were pricing a 71.1% probability of a 25-basis-point increase at next week’s meeting on Friday, after expectations moved higher following Thursday’s producer inflation report.
August PPI increased 0.4% month over month, while annual producer inflation accelerated to 5.4% from 4.8% in July. Energy prices rose 4.2% during the month.
As The Crypto Times reported after the PPI release, Bitcoin fell below $77,000 as traders increased expectations that the Fed could raise rates in September.
However, economists have indicated that core CPI remains the more important consumer inflation signal ahead of the decision.
Reuters noted that a monthly core reading above the 0.2% consensus, particularly a rise of around 0.4%, could strengthen the case for an immediate rate hike.
What Could the CPI Report Mean for Bitcoin?
Bitcoin’s immediate response will likely depend less on whether headline CPI reaches 3.4% and more on how the actual numbers compare with expectations.
| CPI Scenario | Fed Implication | Possible Bitcoin Reaction |
|---|---|---|
| Core CPI 0.0%–0.1% | Could reduce September hike expectations | Yields and dollar could ease, supporting BTC |
| Core CPI around 0.2% | Broadly in line with expectations | Initial reaction may be limited or volatile |
| Core CPI around 0.3% | Adds evidence of persistent inflation | Hike odds and yields could move higher |
| Core CPI 0.4% or above | Stronger case for September tightening | Could increase downside pressure on BTC |
These scenarios are not price predictions. The market reaction will also depend on details including shelter, energy and service inflation, as well as how Treasury yields and rate expectations respond after the release.
Bitcoin has already shown sensitivity to changes in the rates outlook this month.
A stronger-than-expected August payroll report previously pushed BTC below $80,000 as September hike expectations increased. The Crypto Times reported that U.S. employers added 162,000 jobs in August, well above expectations at the time.
Treasury Yields and Dollar Could Amplify Bitcoin’s Move
CPI is also arriving during a sharp repricing across the bond market.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield reached 4.957% on Friday, moving close to the 5% level, while the U.S. Dollar Index stood around 99.084. Rising energy prices and expectations for tighter monetary policy have contributed to the move.
The interaction between CPI, yields and the dollar could therefore matter as much for Bitcoin as the inflation figure itself.
A softer core CPI print that pushes Treasury yields and the dollar lower would remove some of the macro pressure that has weighed on Bitcoin this week. A hotter reading accompanied by another rise in yields could have the opposite effect.
Bitcoin’s current 24-hour range provides the first price area to watch around the release. BTC has traded as low as $76,670.90 and as high as $78,520.97, according to CoinMarketCap.
A move beyond either side of that range following CPI would provide a clearer indication of how traders are repricing the inflation and Fed outlook.
What Matters After CPI?
The immediate focus after the 12:30 UTC release will be on four figures: monthly core CPI, annual core CPI, the 10-year Treasury yield and September Fed rate-hike probabilities.
The Fed currently holds its target rate at 3.50%–3.75%, and economists remain less convinced about a September hike than financial markets. A Reuters poll published September 9 found that roughly 70% of surveyed economists expected policymakers to leave rates unchanged next week.
That gap between economist forecasts and market pricing means Friday’s CPI report has room to move expectations sharply in either direction.
For Bitcoin, an in-line 0.4% headline and 0.2% core reading would leave traders examining the details rather than the headline alone. A meaningful surprise in core CPI, however, could quickly change expectations for the September Fed decision—and set the direction for BTC heading into next week.
