The White House is reportedly planning to host a meeting next Wednesday with representatives from the cryptocurrency and prediction-market industries.
According to a Politico report published on Thursday, the attendee list and agenda have not been finalized, and executives from traditional financial firms could also participate. It remains unclear whether President Donald Trump will attend. Moreover, there is no confirmation or denial from the White House regarding the meeting.
The planned gathering would bring together two sectors that have become increasingly prominent in the Trump administration’s financial policy agenda. Both cryptocurrency and prediction markets are facing questions over federal oversight, market structure and the division of regulatory authority.
CFTC advisory panel meets the next day
The White House event is expected to take place one day before the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Innovation Advisory Committee holds its inaugural meeting on Aug. 20.
The CFTC released the agenda earlier Thursday. The four-hour session will cover cryptocurrency regulation, artificial intelligence in financial markets, and prediction markets.
CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig, who is sponsoring the committee, said the panel would bring together industry participants and other experts to discuss how emerging technologies and financial products are affecting financial markets.
The first session, titled “Crypto’s Regulatory Evolution: From Uncertainty to Clarity,” will examine the development of US crypto markets, state licensing regimes and the lack of a comprehensive federal market-structure framework. The committee is also scheduled to discuss cybersecurity, operational resilience and crypto infrastructure, as well as possible areas where regulators could act under existing authorities.
CLARITY Act remains in focus
The meetings come as the crypto industry awaits Senate action on the CLARITY Act, a broad market-structure bill that would establish a federal framework for digital-asset markets. The Senate is expected to take up the legislation after lawmakers return from their August recess next month. The bill remains one of the industry’s principal legislative priorities in Washington.
The CFTC’s agenda also reflects issues that extend beyond the legislation. The committee is scheduled to consider how existing regulatory principles could apply to AI-enabled financial firms and autonomous systems, including applications involving trading, compliance, surveillance and portfolio management.
Prediction markets add another regulatory issue
Prediction markets will form the third major part of the CFTC meeting. The committee plans to examine the growth of event contracts, the respective roles of federal and state regulators, recent litigation and enforcement actions, and concerns around product design, market manipulation and customer protection.
The timing places the White House gathering immediately ahead of a CFTC forum that will address many of the same policy areas.
For now, the White House meeting remains tentative, with its participants and agenda still subject to change. The CFTC meeting, by contrast, has a published agenda and is scheduled for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time on August 20.
