Coinbase Stock Plunges 14% After Q2 Earnings Miss, Can COIN Recover

Key Highlights

  • Coinbase stock fell as much as 14% after reporting a $359 million Q2 net loss and its third consecutive quarterly loss.
  • Despite the weak earnings, Coinbase increased its crypto trading market share to a record 10.3% and continued growing its subscription and stablecoin business.
  • Traders are watching the $139 support level, while a recovery above $157.50 could improve the stock’s short-term outlook.

Coinbase Global’s stock (NASDAQ: COIN) suffered a heavy sell-off on Friday after the crypto exchange released its second-quarter 2026 earnings. The stock dropped as much as 14% during the trading session as the company announced a $359 million net loss.

As of the time of reporting, COIN is trading for $139.94. Its market capitalization has also decreased to around $37.16 billion in value, with an average trading volume of around $8.5 million

Why is Coinbase going down?

The most logical reasoning at the current situation for the COIN price drop is the company not fulfilling its quarterly expectations. The stock fell from about $155 shortly after the earnings report was released.

According to the release, Coinbase reported revenue of $1.2 billion for the quarter, down from $1.5 billion a year earlier. It also posted a loss of $1.36 per share, while analysts had expected a much smaller loss. The results marked the company’s third straight quarterly loss.

Coinbase said the weak results were due to the difficult market conditions during the quarter. For instance, Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, has lost more than 27% of its value this year. It slipped 3.30% as of Friday to around $62k while the crypto market also declined 1.11% to $2.18 trillion, according to CoinMarketCap. In fact, the whole market is currently in the red.

At the same time, the high inflation in the United States has reduced hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates anytime soon. This has pushed many investors away from risky assets like cryptocurrencies. In addition, money has continued to leave spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, adding more pressure to the market.

The company also said total spot crypto trading volume across the market dropped 25% compared with the previous quarter. As fewer people bought and sold digital assets, Coinbase’s transaction revenue also fell by 21%.

Coinbase keeps growing its market share

Even so, Coinbase said it continued to win a larger share of crypto trading. Its crypto trading market share increased to 10.3% in the second quarter from 9.1% in the first quarter. That was the third quarter in a row that the company gained market share.

Coinbase also reached another record in crypto derivatives trading market share, even though trading activity in the wider derivatives market declined.

The company also showed that it is becoming less dependent on Bitcoin trading. Subscription and services revenue rose to $555 million and made up 48% of total net revenue during the quarter. Coinbase said average USDC held on its platform reached a record $20 billion, representing more than 30% of all USDC in circulation at the end of the quarter. The company also reported continued growth in stablecoin payments and prediction markets, showing that more parts of its business are contributing to revenue.

“In Q2 we hit our 3rd consecutive all-time high in crypto trading volume market share, proving our Everything Exchange can deliver in all market conditions,” Coinbase Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong said. “Coinbase is no longer a bet just on the price of Bitcoin. All of financial services are getting updated by crypto.”

Current key price level is next big challenge

Looking ahead, traders will be looking out for a few important price levels. Coinbase shares had briefly recovered to around $157.50 before sellers quickly pushed the stock lower again.

The $139 level is now seen as the nearest support. If buyers manage to hold that area, the stock could attempt another move toward $157.50.

A stronger break above that level could open the door to $160.14, with the previous closing price near $163.58 becoming the next upside target. However, if the stock falls below that level, the selling pressure increases, with the next support levels yet to be defined.
