Bitcoin is currently hovering near $64,300 as investors await the Federal Open Market Committee’s (FOMC) interest rate announcement, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET today on July 29, 2026.
The two-day meeting, which began Tuesday under Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, marks the fifth consecutive gathering at which policymakers are widely expected to keep the federal funds target range at 3.50% to 3.75%.
Market pricing from CME FedWatch data places the probability of a hold between 60% and 70%, while the chance of a 25-basis-point hike has climbed to roughly 30-40% in recent days.
Additionally, rising energy costs tied to Middle East tensions have fueled the uptick in hike odds, even after cooler inflation readings earlier this month. No rate cut is priced in. Because this meeting does not include a Summary of Economic Projections, traders will scrutinize the policy statement’s language and Warsh’s subsequent press conference for any signals on the path of rates. Warsh has previously emphasized reduced forward guidance, heightening uncertainty around the messaging.
Market Expectations and Historical Patterns
A hold that matches consensus could deliver a modest relief bounce for Bitcoin if the accompanying statement avoids aggressive “higher for longer” rhetoric. In past cycles, Bitcoin has often treated expected holds as neutral-to-mildly constructive when liquidity conditions are left unchanged. However, history also shows a frequent “sell the news” reaction on FOMC days, with Bitcoin’s average daily volatility rising 50% to 100% above normal levels.
The more disruptive scenario remains a surprise hike. Higher rates typically strengthen the U.S. dollar, reduce overall financial-system liquidity, and dampen appetite for risk assets such as cryptocurrencies.
Bitcoin has already shown sensitivity to the recent rise in hike probabilities, with the price dipping toward multi-day lows earlier this week amid reports of spot Bitcoin ETF outflows. Support levels near $62,000 and $60,000 have been flagged as potential downside targets should the Fed tighten.
Conversely, any unexpectedly dovish tone, though considered low probability, would likely support Bitcoin by improving liquidity expectations and weakening the dollar.
The June 2026 meeting offers a recent parallel: the Fed held rates steady but adopted a more hawkish posture focused on price stability, contributing to a drop that pushed Bitcoin below $64,000 in the following sessions.
Broader context includes mixed labor-market data and energy-price volatility. Bitcoin’s current trading range reflects these cross-currents. After recovering from levels near $58,000 earlier in July, the cryptocurrency has largely traded sideways into the meeting, with daily volumes remaining elevated as leveraged positions adjust.
Potential Pathways for Bitcoin After the Announcement
Should the Fed deliver a clean hold without hawkish embellishment, short-term price action could favor a bounce toward recent highs near $65,000–$66,000 as risk appetite stabilizes. Persistent concerns about energy-driven inflation, however, mean any language highlighting readiness to tighten later this year could still pressure the asset.
At the time of publishing, as per CoinMarketCap data, BTC price was near $64,600 with a 24 hour trading volume of $24.58 billion, which is down significantly compared to regular days.
A 25-basis-point increase would represent a clearer negative catalyst, potentially accelerating selling pressure and testing lower supports amid reduced liquidity.
Longer-term dynamics remain tied to the overall monetary trajectory. Sustained restrictive policy has historically weighed on Bitcoin, while eventual easing cycles have supported recoveries. With Warsh still early in his tenure, markets are also assessing how the new leadership’s communication style will influence expectations for the September and subsequent meetings.
Traders will parse every word of the 2:00 PM ET statement and the 2:30 PM ET press conference. Positioning data suggests many participants have already reduced leverage ahead of the event, which may limit extreme moves but will not eliminate the characteristic FOMC-day swings. Bitcoin’s dual role as both a risk asset and a perceived store of value ensures that monetary-policy shifts continue to register quickly in its price.
As the clock ticks toward the announcement, the cryptocurrency market remains on edge, balancing the base-case probability of policy continuity against the tangible risk of a tighter stance driven by external price pressures.
