Buterin’s analysis moves beyond simplistic “AI will completely surpass humans” narratives. Instead, he models both humans and machines as possessing broad, multi-dimensional capability sets, spanning physical tasks and complex mental processes like strategic thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence.

Buterin offers a precise definition of AGI: AI powerful enough that, if uploaded into robot bodies and all humans disappeared, it could independently sustain and advance civilization.
This definition highlights why AGI represents more than advanced tooling. No job would be permanently safe from automation, and on a civilizational level, human dominance of Earth would shift from inherent superiority to mere historical accident — with long-term risks of machines gaining permanent advantage through self-replication.
He distinguishes AGI from Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) and uses a classic chess analogy to illustrate the intermediate “centaur” (human + machine) phase. While machines surpassed solo human players decades ago, human-machine teams remained superior until roughly 2017. In the current pre-singularity period, humans may increasingly focus on high-level strategy while machines handle raw execution, a dynamic already highly visible in modern software development.

- Individuals able to choose technological upgrades for competitive exploration or remain largely human while directing AI agents.

Buterin warns this path is precarious. Risks include AI acting independently becoming too powerful, single entities locking in dominance, destructive technologies, or integration eroding core humanity.For these reasons, he supports slowing the pace: “I wish that we can ride through the narrow corridor at 60 kph and not 200 kph.”
