Coinbase executive and newly appointed Base App lead Jordan Fish aka Cobie has publicly acknowledged that Coinbase faces a serious credibility problem among crypto-native users, admitting the company has become too disconnected from its community after a series of “unforced errors.”
His remarks came during an exchange on X after crypto commentator Rune questioned how Coinbase expects to attract new on-chain users when many existing Base supporters feel repeatedly let down by the ecosystem’s leadership.
Cobie says coinbase has become too distant from crypto users
Responding to criticism, Cobie clarified that he recently took over responsibility for Base App, Coinbase’s core trading products, and Advanced Trading, but does not oversee the Base chain itself.
He acknowledged that Coinbase has struggled to stay connected with its core crypto audience.
“I think that typically CB has been a little bit in an ivory tower and a little bit distant from users, particularly crypto natives.”
Cobie said rebuilding that relationship would take time and that one of his immediate priorities is bringing the voice of on-chain users more directly into Coinbase’s product development process.
Cobie also acknowledged that Coinbase and Base have damaged their reputation through a series of avoidable mistakes.
“Obviously CB/Base has burned a lot of user goodwill… through some unforced errors.”
He added that accepting leadership over Base App also meant inheriting much of the community’s frustration. Still, Cobie said he accepted the role because he believes rebuilding trust is possible.
Coinbase leadership signals shift from Creative Coins To AI
Just days earlier, Base creator Jesse Pollak acknowledged that the ecosystem’s strategy centered around creator coins and social applications had failed.
Pollak admitted Base misjudged where crypto adoption would come from and said the company is now shifting its focus toward trading, payments, and AI-powered applications instead.
Shortly before that, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong echoed the same message, confirming that Coinbase had abandoned its broader content coin strategy in favor of products built around trading infrastructure, payments, and AI agents.
The statements from Coinbase’s leadership pointed out that Base Chains previous goal for creator-driven on-chain social experiences had not resulted in the widespread adoption that many had anticipated.
Base airdrop rumors added to community frustration
The ecosystem has also faced weeks of speculation surrounding Base’s future roadmap.
Last month, developers discovered GitHub references mentioning a “Sybil-Resistant Airdrop” alongside mainnet migration code inside an official Base repository.
Although Coinbase never confirmed an airdrop, the discovery fueled widespread expectations across the community before later being dismissed by many as internal development work.
Combined with recent ecosystem controversies, the episode further contributed to growing skepticism among users about Base’s communication strategy.
Rune says the problem goes beyond the product
Rune argued that Base’s biggest issue extends beyond product design.
According to him, many users no longer believe Coinbase genuinely prioritizes the people building on its network.
“It’s worse than distant; it’s been actively harmful to the people who showed up and believed.”
He also criticized parts of Base’s leadership for appearing dismissive after users suffered significant losses during recent ecosystem events.
Still, Rune acknowledged that the underlying technology remains strong. “Base has the infrastructure to be the best L2 in crypto.” but argued that infrastructure alone doesn’t address the leadership issue he’s describing.
Cobie said he would not be able to fix the relationship “in a week, or maybe even a month.” Neither he nor Rune specified what a resolution would look like or on what timeline. The exchange ended without either side stating whether the underlying problem has been addressed.
What’s next for Base after the creator coin pivot?
The leadership change comes as Base shifts its focus toward trading, payments, and AI after moving away from creator coins. Whether the revised strategy changes sentiment within the crypto community remains unclear, as users continue to debate the platform’s direction following months of criticism.
For many crypto-native users, the next phase of Base will be judged less by new features and more by whether Coinbase can consistently demonstrate that it listens to and acts on the concerns of the community it hopes to bring on-chain.
