Key Highlights
- Base introduced builder codes for applications using the x402 payment standard.
- Builder Codes are ERC-721 NFTs that attach attribution data to transactions.
- Developers can track app-level x402 traffic and payment activity on-chain.
Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain, has officially rolled out Builder Codes for x402 applications, marking a step toward better on-chain attribution and developer incentives in the growing AI agent economy.
In an X post on Monday, the team stated that builder codes enable seamless on-chain attribution of x402 payments by appending ERC-8021 schema 2 codes to settlement transaction calldata. This allows Base to accurately track which applications drive or serve x402 transactions, unlocking app-level analytics and potential future reward distributions for builders.
What are Builder Codes?
Builder Codes function as unique identifiers minted as ERC-721 NFTs. Developers can register a custom code (e.g., “myapp” or alphanumeric strings up to 32 characters) through Base’s dashboard. Once integrated, these codes are automatically attached to x402 payment settlements on Base, providing transparent, verifiable attribution directly on the blockchain.
This launch is particularly relevant for the x402 ecosystem, an open standard (reviving the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code) that enables machine-to-machine and AI agent payments using stablecoins like USDC on Base. With the rise of autonomous AI agents making frequent micropayments for APIs, data, and services, accurate attribution has become critical for developers and projects.
How can developers benefit from Builder Codes?
- Onchain Analytics: Track exactly how much x402 traffic and payments your application generates.
- Traffic Attribution: Ensure your project receives proper credit for driving or fulfilling paid requests.
- Fast Integration: Developers can set up Builder Codes in minutes by pointing AI coding agents (such as Claude, Cursor, or Codex) to official setup instructions.
- Future Rewards: As Base expands its builder reward programs, attributed activity could translate into direct incentives.
Teams can visit Base’s dashboard to claim their unique Builder Code and then follow the official documentation at the Coinbase Developer Platform to integrate it into x402 clients or resource servers. The system supports both buyer-side (client) and seller-side (resource server) attribution paths.
Industry members join x402
In April 2026, Coinbase, Stripe, and Cloudflare joined the x402 Foundation to develop a unified open standard for internet-native payments.
According to Coinbase, the x402 protocol revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code, enabling seamless, automatic micropayments between applications and AI agents online. Users can make frictionless payments, often in stablecoins like USDC, without manual approval for each transaction.
Market shows interest in internet-native payments
This development builds on Base’s broader push to become a preferred chain for AI agents and internet-native payments. It comes at a time when x402 adoption is accelerating, with major players like Stripe and Cloudflare showing interest in the protocol.
While Builder Codes offers benefits such as faster analytics, easier integration, and potential future rewards, its long-term impact will depend on adoption rates and whether it meaningfully drives developer activity on Base.
