- Franklin Templeton has launched a new dedicated digital asset division called Franklin Crypto.
Franklin Templeton today completed its acquisition of cryptocurrency investment manager 250 Digital, marking another step in the asset management firm’s expansion into digital assets and blockchain-based investing.
According to the official release, the transaction brings 250 Digital’s investment team and its actively managed cryptocurrency strategies under the Franklin Templeton umbrella. As part of the agreement, Franklin Templeton will also invest in the strategies previously managed by the firm.
The acquisition reflects Franklin Templeton’s continued expansion of its digital asset business as institutional interest in cryptocurrencies grows.
Franklin launches dedicated crypto business
Alongside the acquisition, Franklin Templeton launched Franklin Crypto, a dedicated active digital asset management division focused on serving institutional investors. The new business will combine crypto-native investment expertise with Franklin Templeton’s global distribution network and institutional client base.
The division will be led by cryptocurrency industry veterans Christopher Perkins, who will serve as Head of Franklin Crypto, and Seth Ginns, who has been appointed Chief Investment Officer. The pair will work alongside Tony Pecore, a longtime member of Franklin Templeton’s Digital Assets investment team.
Franklin Crypto will operate under the leadership of Sandy Kaul, Head of Innovation at Franklin Templeton.
Expanding institutional crypto investment offerings
The new division is expected to focus on actively managed cryptocurrency investment strategies for institutional investors seeking exposure to digital assets through professionally managed portfolios.
According to Franklin Templeton, the acquisition strengthens its ability to offer institutional crypto investment products by combining the specialized expertise of the former 250 Digital team with the firm’s existing digital asset infrastructure. The company said Franklin Crypto will offer actively managed strategies while leveraging Franklin Templeton’s established capabilities in portfolio construction, risk management, and institutional distribution.
The launch builds on years of investment by Franklin Templeton in blockchain technology and digital asset research. The firm already operates a dedicated digital assets unit responsible for fundamental research, active portfolio management, and institutional risk oversight across digital asset markets.
Over the past several years, the firm has emerged as one of the most active traditional financial institutions in the crypto sector, launching blockchain-based investment products and expanding its digital asset capabilities.
Bitcoin ETF innovation signals broader strategy
The acquisition follows another major digital asset initiative announced by Franklin Templeton earlier this month.
On June 19, the asset manager filed for a new category of exchange-traded funds known as Dividend Reinvestment into Bitcoin (DRIP) ETFs. The proposed funds would automatically direct dividend income generated from equity investments into Bitcoin exposure, creating a hybrid investment product that combines traditional stock market returns with ongoing Bitcoin accumulation.
If approved, the products would be among the first ETF structures designed to systematically convert stock dividend yields into Bitcoin exposure without requiring investors to actively manage allocations.
The filing reflects Franklin Templeton’s broader effort to integrate digital assets into traditional investment products.
Strategic push into digital assets
Franklin Templeton said the acquisition is part of its broader strategy to expand its presence across the digital asset ecosystem. The company said it remains focused on developing capabilities in blockchain technology, tokenization, digital assets, and digital asset management.
The transaction also reflects a broader trend across traditional finance, with major asset managers increasingly acquiring crypto-native firms to accelerate their entry into digital asset markets.
Growing institutional interest in crypto
The acquisition comes as institutional adoption of digital assets continues to expand globally.
Asset managers, banks, and financial institutions are increasingly seeking exposure to digital assets through regulated investment products, tokenized assets, blockchain-based financial infrastructure, and actively managed crypto strategies.
Taken together, the launch of Bitcoin-focused ETF products and the acquisition of 250 Digital further expand Franklin Templeton’s digital asset business.
By combining traditional asset management expertise with crypto-native investment capabilities, the firm is positioning itself to play a larger role in the evolving convergence of traditional finance and blockchain-based investing.
