Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently commented on the Ethereum roadmap, explaining why pushing for maximum scaling isn’t always the top focus for the network.
His comments came in response to an X post from Paradigm’s research partner Storm Slivkoff outlining priorities from Ethereum’s development.
Prioritizing quality over quantity
Buterin stated that developers choose Ethereum not only for current needs but also for potential future demands. He noted that while large-scale improvements could theoretically increase throughput by orders of magnitude, the combination of upcoming Glam changes and client upgrades may already provide sufficient capacity for many years.
“It’s possible that Glam changes plus client improvements alone get us to a very stable state, and we could make the decision of prioritizing further scaling (the full 1000x) based on actual usage (and if it stays low, focus on non-scale goals before the full 1000x),” he wrote.
Slivkoff’s Ethereum roadmap priorities
Slivkoff’s proposed roadmap ranked development priorities as follows:
- Post-quantum security – HIGH
- Fast Layer 1 performance – HIGH
- Privacy features – MEDIUM
- Gigagas Layer 1 scaling – LOW
- Teragas Layer 2 scaling – LOW
Buterin echoed the sentiment that scaling beyond the expected improvements should be deprioritized until actual network usage demonstrates a need.
DeFi as a pillar to Ethereum
Buterin’s comment came just a day after he highlighted decentralized finance’s (DeFi) role in the Ethereum Foundation priorities and described open financial systems as fundamental to the long-term purpose of Ethereum.
He argued that financial access plays a key role in individual autonomy and that Ethereum’s development should continue to support permissionless financial tools alongside other applications.
Focus on realistic goals
Buterin’s approach signals a shift from raw throughput to strategic improvements that improve Ethereum’s usability and security. By prioritizing features that directly increase the network’s capacity to support new applications, rather than chasing theoretical maximum scaling, Ethereum aims to balance practical needs with long-term resilience.
The network is expected to continue evolving in this measured way, ensuring that developers can build robust applications without overcommitting to scaling goals that may not be necessary for years.
