MetaMask Adds Google and Apple Login for Crypto Wallets

MetaMask, one of the most popular crypto wallets in the world, has added a new way for people to open and use a wallet without having to face too many confusing steps.

The company has introduced what it calls social login, which is a feature that lets users sign in with their Google or Apple accounts instead of relying only on the traditional recovery method.

When a user wants to create a wallet through social login, all they have to do now is simply sign in with their Google or Apple account and then set up a password of their choice.

Once this is complete, the wallet is ready, and the important recovery phrase is quietly created in the background. Users do not need to write it down or memorize it right away. The recovery phrase can later be unlocked by using the same social account and the chosen password, which makes the process far less stressful for newcomers.

MetaMask explained that this new option does not change the way control works. The wallet is still self-custodial, which means the user is the only one who owns and manages the funds.

The company said, “No single entity, not even MetaMask, can access all of the pieces needed in order to retrieve your SRP.” Instead, only the combination of the social account and the password can unlock the recovery phrase stored on the device.

However, while the social login makes setup easier, password safety is very important. If a password is lost, MetaMask cannot recover it for the user, which means the wallet would be locked forever. The company notes that users should take password creation and storage seriously.

Before this update, every wallet required a twelve-word Secret Recovery Phrase, also known as SRP. These phrases were often made up of random words.

While strong in terms of security, they were sometimes frustrating for people to write down, store, and keep safe. By reducing this burden, MetaMask hopes more people will feel comfortable creating a wallet.
