Vitalik Ethereum Foundation Undergoing Leadership Changes

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, just shared that there are some ongoing changes in the Ethereum Foundation (EF) leadership structure.

In a tweet posted on X, he said that the changes have been happening for almost a year. Some are known, while others are still being worked on.

According to Buterin, the restructuring is meant to enhance technical skills among the EF leaders and also improve communication with people involved in its ecosystem, be they individual and institutional users, app developers, wallet providers, or L2 solutions.

Other goals include bringing in fresh talent, hastening work, and helping app builders keep critical values such as privacy, open-source development, and freedom from censorship.

He also highlighted the importance of increasing EF’s use of decentralized and privacy-preserving technologies, including the Ethereum blockchain, for payments and treasury management.

The co-founder clarified that some objectives are not included in this restructuring. He said there will be no change in the way they think, no strong push to influence regulators, and no formation of a centralized group that is influenced by politics.

“These things aren’t what EF does, and this isn’t going to change,” he stated, urging those with different ideas to start their own organizations.

The announcement follows recent leadership changes at EF. In September 2024, Danny Ryan, a key researcher who helped with the Ethereum proof-of-stake change, announced his departure after seven years. His work included leading “The Merge” and the launch of Beacon Chain in 2021.

Meanwhile, in January 2025, Hsiao-Wei Wang joined the EF leadership team. She has been with the EF Research team since 2017 and has contributed a lot to Ethereum Layer 1 research, including early work on sharding.
