Meta Urged to Add Bitcoin to $72B Treasury Reserve

Ethan Peck, an employee at the National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR), has filed a Bitcoin Treasury Shareholder Proposal at Meta, urging the tech giant to put a small percentage of its $72 billion cash reserve into Bitcoin. According to Peck, who filed the proposal for his family’s shares, Bitcoin could be seen as a barrier against inflation and currency devaluation.

The NCPPR, a conservative Washington-based think tank, has aggressively urged corporations to look into Bitcoin as a treasury asset. In December 2024, the organization brought a similar proposal to Microsoft’s shareholder meeting, asking the company to consider Bitcoin as a hedge.

The idea received more attention after MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor spoke in favor of it, stating that Bitcoin was a hedge against inflation. It further contacted Amazon to ask it to commit 5% of its existing assets to Bitcoin, though this has a low probability of being heard.

The NCPPR will focus on the performance of Bitcoin, which significantly surpasses traditional assets, such as bonds. According to the think tank, Bitcoin rose by 124% in 2024. Bonds have modestly grown. Peck believes that Meta’s shareholders deserve more than a very conventional approach to asset allocation when inflation continues to eat away at the value of cash reserves.

The recommendation is compared with MicroStrategy, which has become the forerunner in the use of Bitcoin as a corporate asset. MicroStrategy’s shares far outperformed those of Microsoft and Amazon because they surged 2,191% in the last five years when they held significant BTC.

NCPPR thinks Meta is the best company to begin corporate adoption of BTC since they have been a pioneering entity embracing new technological advancement throughout their history.

As institutional investors and activists continue to pressure Bitcoin, Meta has become part of a swelling movement at an important crossroads.
