According to multiple French local media outlets, French authorities have finalized prison sentences for two men who were arrested on charges of funding terrorism in Syria via crypto.
Franco-Algerian Sami Allem and Franco-Moroccan Abderrahman Cheikh were charged for “participation in a terrorist criminal association” and “financing of terrorism” by a Paris criminal court on Friday.
The two men were arrested in September 2020 following an operation by France’s anti-terrorism prosecution Parquet national anti terroriste (Pnat). A total of 29 people were arrested by the French police then, as suspects of funding Islamist extremists in Syria with crypto.
Allem was sentenced to three years in prison with one year of probation. Cheikh was sentenced to two years in jail with two years’ probation.
It was found that Allem and Cheik were part of a network that has been accused of funding “jihadists” in Syria using crypto between 2018 and 2020.
According to the French report, the amount that was transferred to Syria for funding terrorism via crypto was around 280,000 euros ($280,268).
