Taking advantage of the NFT craze, Rolling Stone magazine entered the NFT market by auctioning two digital magazine covers created in partnership with Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC). The auction is now live for these two digital magazine covers on the digital art marketplace SuperRare.
The collaboration between Rolling Stone and BAYC primate-themed art collective first launched in physical form last week, with the instant sale of 2,500 limited-edition paper zine featuring Bored Ape on the classic Rolling Stone magazine cover.
The auction began today and will last five days. Soon after the auction went live, bidding for the piece had surpassed 10 ETH, or approximately $47,000. Bidding for another Rolling Stone magazine cover NFT featuring a “Mutant Ape” went live on SuperRare simultaneously that will last five days as well.
These covers are the first of seven planned NFT releases by Rolling Stone in partnership with Bored Ape creators Yuga Labs. The other five digital pieces would also feature signature Bored Ape characters created by several NFT artists.
These NFTs launch has cleared the way for Rolling Stone magazine to enter in Web 3 space. Recently, many magazines grabbed headlines selling their NFT covers. The Economist, a renowned news magazine, has sold its “Down the Rabbit Hole” cover as an NFT for 99.9 ETH which is almost 422,000 US dollars.
In September this year, TIME magazine released its NFT collection titled “TIMEpieces” which sold out in a minute. Along with that, TIME magazine has also collaborated with the Cool Cats NFT project featuring cats reading TIME magazine.
Though, none of those publications partnered with a DeFi-native brand for their NFT releases. And was in complete contrast to disruptive and culturally resonant as Bored Ape.
Gus Wenner, the magazines’ president stated that the cultural groundswell associated with NFTartists is in line with movements Rolling Stone has covered for decades. Commenting on this collaboration with BAYC he said that “The Bored Apes” shared a love of music and counter-culture that makes them fantastic collaborators to bring extraordinary projects to life.
