Injective Confirms Secure Network Upgrade After App Exploit

Key Highlights

  • Injective completed an accelerated network upgrade after an exploit affected a limited number of ecosystem applications running binary options markets.
  • The incident did not compromise the Injective blockchain, consensus mechanism, native INJ assets, or user and staked funds.
  • Some validators were temporarily jailed, and several exchanges paused deposits and withdrawals while completing node upgrades.

Injective, a Layer 1 blockchain, contributors completed an accelerated network upgrade on August 31 that required more time than initially planned to roll out across validators and related infrastructure. The Injective blockchain and its native token, INJ, remained secure during the process. The protocol and consensus mechanism were not compromised, user funds and staked assets stayed intact, and the chain continued to process transactions.

In an X post on September 1, Injective noted that the upgrade was initiated after an exploit affected a limited number of ecosystem applications that operated binary options markets. Injective said the attack was limited to those applications and did not compromise the Injective blockchain, protocol, native assets or consensus mechanism. The relevant attack vector has been contained and patched.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM INJECTIVE

Yesterday, Injective contributors coordinated an accelerated network upgrade that took longer than initially expected to complete across all validators and ecosystem infrastructure.

Temporary effects on validators and exchanges

Because the upgrade was accelerated, some validators were temporarily jailed when they could not complete the process within the required time window. This produced a short-term decline in the displayed amount of network stake.

A number of exchanges also paused deposits and withdrawals while they updated their nodes. No staked INJ was lost or placed at risk. Injective stated that it is coordinating directly with the affected validators and exchanges as they finish the upgrade steps.

Reports that described the events as an exploit or a halt of the Injective blockchain were inaccurate, the statement said. The network underwent an upgrade rather than a halt, and the underlying systems remained operational throughout.

Injective is introducing additional technical controls. These include enhanced invariants, real-time monitoring systems, and further safeguards intended to detect unusual activity earlier. The organization said it will continue working with ecosystem developers to strengthen security practices as attack methods evolve.

Background on institutional activity

In a separate development, Injective Institutional Services, an affiliated entity of the Injective layer-1 network, received registration from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as a transfer agent, according to the registration announced in a blog post dated August 19.

A transfer agent maintains official records of securities ownership and processes transfers, distributions, and related administrative functions. For tokenized securities, the role provides a regulated mechanism for ownership records that operates alongside blockchain-based records.

The transfer-agent registration expands the range of regulated functions available within Injective’s existing tokenization infrastructure, which has been used for institutional funds and other real-world assets.

Current network status

As of the September 1 statement, the Injective network is fully operational. The accelerated upgrade has been completed across the required participants, temporary restrictions on certain exchanges are being lifted as node updates finish, and staked assets remain secure.

No further details on the number of affected applications, the scale of the isolated exploit or the specific technical nature of the patched attack vector were provided in the official communication.
