Binance’s crypto payment service, Binance Pay, has expanded its network in Japan, allowing eligible international tourists to use cryptocurrency at PayPay-supported merchants nationwide through the HIVEX payment framework.
According to a press release, the service became available on September 30. Binance also said the rollout is available to its approximately 48 million eligible Binance Pay users across more than 100 countries and regions, subject to the eligibility requirements for the Japan service.
The integration links Binance Pay with PayPay’s existing merchant payment infrastructure rather than requiring merchants to directly accept cryptocurrency. PayPay-supported businesses continue to receive settlements in Japanese yen.
Thomas Gregory, VP of Payments & Fiat at Binance, said the integration brings traditional payment systems and digital assets closer together, giving international travelers another way to pay while helping PayPay merchants serve overseas customers.
How the crypto payments work
Eligible tourists can make payments through the Binance app using two methods. They can display a payment code for a merchant to scan or scan a participating merchant’s PayPay QR code through Binance Pay and enter the payment amount.
Binance said crypto is automatically converted into Japanese yen at the point of payment. The exchange also said transactions are processed in real time and do not require users to maintain a separate local bank account or payment application.
The feature is specifically intended for international tourists visiting Japan and is not available to residents of Japan. Users must also have completed Binance’s identity verification process and meet the eligibility requirements for visitors using the service in Japan.
PayPay’s network covers a broad range of businesses, including convenience stores, restaurants, supermarkets, shopping centres, taxis and other local merchants.
HIVEX bridges crypto and PayPay
The connection is powered by HIVEX, a payment interoperability framework developed by TBCASoft. HIVEX connects participating payment networks, allowing users to transact through existing payment infrastructure.
The latest rollout builds on an earlier PayPay integration launched by Binance Japan in November 2025. That service allowed users to buy and sell crypto using PayPay Money and PayPay Points, with deposits and withdrawals handled directly through their linked accounts.
The Binance integration is part of a wider expansion of QR-based payment connections across Asian travel markets. PayPay has previously connected its merchant network with several overseas payment services through HIVEX, according to the companies involved.
The Japan launch follows Binance Pay’s August 2026 expansion in Bhutan, where users gained access to crypto payments at more than 3,700 merchants through DK Bank’s existing QR network.
Binance co-founder Yi He also highlighted the PayPay expansion as part of the company’s broader payments activity. The development adds another local payment network to Binance Pay as crypto companies seek to connect digital assets with established payment infrastructure.
