Zcash developers have agreed on November 5, 2026, as the target date for the NU7 mainnet upgrade, following discussions among organizations and engineering teams across the ecosystem.

The upgrade is scheduled to first reach Zcash’s official testnet on October 6. This will give developers, node operators, and other infrastructure providers time to test the changes before the planned mainnet activation.

Developers reduced block interval to 25 seconds to speed confirmations, adjusting subsidies to prevent excess ZEC issuance.
Consensus emerged after extensive ecosystem discussions and coinholder voting, with over 99% support for block‑spacing change.
Network Sustainability Mechanism integration preserves halving schedule, delaying re‑issuance until February 2031.

The timeline was announced on the Zcash Community Forum following discussions among organizations and engineering teams across the ecosystem. The groups reached agreement on the scope and schedule for NU7.

Sean Bowe, writing as ebfull, said the Zcash Foundation, Project Tachyon, Valar Group, ZODL, and Shielded Labs, together with the relevant engineering teams, had reached unanimous agreement after coinholder sentiment results and talks between the Zakura and Zebra teams

Key network changes

One of the main changes under NU7 is a reduction in Zcash’s target block interval from 75 seconds to 25 seconds through ZIP-218. The shorter interval is designed to produce blocks more frequently and reduce transaction confirmation times.

The faster block schedule also requires adjustments to block subsidy parameters so that the higher number of blocks does not increase ZEC issuance on a time-adjusted basis.

NU7 will also disable version 4 transactions and integrate the Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM) through ZIP-234 and ZIP-235. The forum specifies ZIP-234 (alt) and ZIP-235. ZIP-235.

The selected NSM configuration will preserve Zcash’s halving schedule. Under the plan, the reintroduction of previously removed issuance would begin in February 2031.

The upgrade does not introduce new transaction formats, so wallets are not expected to face significant changes. However, full nodes, indexers, and block explorers may require updates to support the new network parameters.

Zcash’s NU7 plans come as ZEC has also seen a sharp increase in market activity. As The Crypto Times reported, ZEC was trading near $1,300 on September 18, after rising more than 17% over 24 hours and more than 170% over the previous month. Market data on September 18 showed ZEC trading well above that level, with prints near $1,470 to $1,510 depending on the venue. Those figures move quickly and are not a reason by themselves for the upgrade timetable.

The price move has occurred alongside several developments around the network, including the NU7 voting process, Ledger’s planned Ironwood integration, and growth in Grayscale’s Zcash exchange-traded product. These developments do not establish a single reason for the recent price increase. Zcash Labs said on September 15 it would commit $80,000 toward Ledger support for the Ironwood shielded pool. Grayscale’s ZCSH product, listed on NYSE Arca on August 25, later published assets under management above $800 million as of September 17.

Community voting also showed strong support for the main NU7 changes. Around 99.9% of participating ZEC holders backed reducing block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, while about 98.9% supported preserving the existing halving schedule. About 2.4 million ZEC took part, from roughly 3.6 million eligible Ironwood balances. About 96.6% of participating ZEC also backed a February 2031 start for NSM reissuance.

NU7 rollout timeline

The next major milestone is September 30, when code completion is expected for the features planned for the testnet upgrade.

NU7 is scheduled to activate on Zcash testnet on October 6. Developers will then use the testnet period to assess how the upgrade performs before making the final mainnet deployment decision.

The final mainnet activation decision and activation height are scheduled for October 20. This timing will allow developers and ecosystem participants to review testnet results before confirming the mainnet rollout.

If the current schedule proceeds as planned, NU7 will activate on Zcash mainnet on November 5, 2026, as confirmed by the co-founder, Sean Bowe.

Activation approximately November 5.

Bowe’s post said activation is approximately November 5 and pointed readers to the same forum thread. The date is a target until the October 20 decision is made.

The upgrade will primarily affect Zcash’s block production, transaction-version support and network sustainability rules. While wallets are not expected to require significant changes, infrastructure operators will need to ensure their systems are compatible with the new network parameters before the mainnet activation.
