Key Highlights
- Coinbase’s cbBTC is expanding to Robinhood Chain through Chainlink CCIP.
- Chainlink says more than $7.5 billion worth of cbBTC is currently in circulation.
- The integration could support lending, liquidity pools, vaults, and derivatives on Robinhood Chain.
Coinbase’s cbBTC is being added to Robinhood Chain, with Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) providing the infrastructure for transferring the token between supported networks.
Chainlink announced the integration on August 27, saying cbBTC will be available on Robinhood Chain through its interoperability system. The company said the token has more than $7.5 billion in circulation.
The deployment gives applications on Robinhood Chain access to Coinbase’s Bitcoin-backed token, which can be used in onchain financial products.
cbBTC comes to Robinhood Chain
cbBTC is a tokenized representation of Bitcoin issued by Coinbase. It lets users access Bitcoin exposure within blockchain applications without moving native BTC onto those networks.
On Robinhood Chain, the token could be used for products such as lending markets, liquidity pools, vaults, and derivatives.
However, these are potential applications of the integration and do not mean that each product is already available on the network.
The addition also gives Robinhood Chain another Bitcoin-linked asset as the network develops its onchain financial infrastructure.
Chainlink provides the transfer infrastructure
The integration uses Chainlink CCIP to connect cbBTC with Robinhood Chain and support transfers between compatible networks.
The deployment follows Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token (CCT) standard, which provides a framework for moving supported tokens across blockchains.
Chainlink also said Robinhood Chain can connect with Base through CCIP, allowing supported assets to move between the two networks.
The deployment gives cbBTC another network where it can be used in onchain applications. The token is already used across DeFi for activities such as collateral and liquidity.
However, the integration alone does not indicate how much cbBTC activity Robinhood Chain will attract. Actual usage will depend on adoption by users and applications.
CCIP integrations extend beyond cbBTC
The announcement comes as Chainlink continues working with other blockchain and financial infrastructure projects.
Earlier this month, BitGo selected CCIP for the planned migration of approximately $7.7 billion worth of WBTC across blockchain networks. That initiative is related to BitGo’s broader changes to its WBTC infrastructure.
In July, Aave Labs selected CCIP for its planned multichain application, with the technology intended to support asset transfers and interactions across different networks.
Chainlink has also previously integrated cbBTC with Tempo, a Layer 1 blockchain backed by Stripe and Paradigm.
The projects involve different assets and applications, but each uses interoperability infrastructure to connect blockchain networks.
What the integration means for bitcoin-backed assets
The deployment does not move native Bitcoin onto Robinhood Chain. Instead, users will interact with cbBTC, whose value is tied to Bitcoin and whose issuance and redemption depend on Coinbase’s infrastructure.
That distinction matters when assessing Bitcoin liquidity on other blockchains.
Adding cbBTC gives Robinhood Chain access to an established Bitcoin-backed token, while Chainlink provides the mechanism for transferring it between supported networks.
Whether the integration develops into meaningful lending, trading or other financial activity will depend on adoption after launch.
For now, the announcement represents another expansion of tokenized Bitcoin infrastructure across blockchain networks, with Coinbase supplying the asset and Chainlink handling the cross-chain connectivity.
