Crypto infrastructure firm BitGo is adopting Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) to support the migration of Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) and future assets issued by the company.
According to an official release, the transition, announced on Tuesday, will move WBTC away from BitGo’s existing cross-chain infrastructure and introduce Chainlink CCIP as the underlying interoperability system for transferring assets across supported blockchain networks.
The migration involves WBTC, one of the largest Bitcoin-backed tokens in the market, with a market capitalization exceeding $7.7 billion. The move comes as BitGo continues expanding beyond custody services, focusing on infrastructure that supports institutional trading, settlement, and decentralized finance applications.
How BitGo is expanding beyond custody
BitGo’s adoption of CCIP follows its recent efforts to broaden its institutional offerings.
In June 2026, BitGo partnered with Morpho to explore institutional DeFi services by combining Morpho’s lending infrastructure with BitGo’s custody and risk management systems.
The partnership marked BitGo’s entry into providing institutions with access to decentralized lending markets while maintaining control over asset security and operational processes.
The Chainlink CCIP integration builds on that expansion by addressing another challenge for institutional users: moving assets across multiple blockchain networks.
How WBTC migration will work
Under the new framework, BitGo plans to use Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token (CCT) standard alongside CCIP for WBTC and future assets.
The system is expected to introduce additional controls for cross-chain transactions, including:
- Transfer limits managed by the issuer.
- Risk management parameters.
- Standardized token operations across different networks.
BitGo has not disclosed when the WBTC migration will be completed.
Chainlink CCIP gains momentum
BitGo’s decision comes amid wider adoption of Chainlink’s interoperability technology across the crypto industry.
In July 2026, Aave Labs selected Chainlink CCIP as the interoperability layer for its upcoming multi-chain application, which will support cross-chain asset transfers and vault management.
