Bitcoin Price Briefly Touches $80,000 Amid Overbought RSI Conditions

The combination of policy support and fund activity helped absorb available supply even as the market absorbed forced liquidations of short positions estimated in the billions of dollars across crypto derivatives earlier in the week.

Bitcoin climbed above the $80,000 mark on Tuesday (2:30 AM UTC), August 25, 2026, reaching intraday highs near $81,200 before pulling back.

This marked the cryptocurrency’s first sustained move above that level since mid-May, capping a sharp multi-day advance that lifted prices more than 22% over the prior week from levels near $63,000–$64,000—according to Coingecko data.

AI Summary
Show
If Bitcoin holds above $80K, institutional inflows could accelerate, prompting broader crypto market expansion.
Sustained overbought RSI suggests near-term pullback risk, likely prompting profit‑taking and tighter trading ranges.
Continued Treasury bond‑buyback support may keep liquidity favorable, enabling Bitcoin to test $90K within months.

This surge is attributed to a combination of improved liquidity expectations, favorable political aspects, and technical momentum. Prices on Binance, a leading crypto exchange, showed Bitcoin opening near $79,000 and testing the upper $81,000 area during the session, with the asset later consolidating in the high $78,000 to low $80,000 range.

At the time of publishing (1:00 PM UTC), BTC was trading near $79,050 with a 24 hour trading volume of $54.25 billion.

Technical Snapshot: Breakout Above Key EMAs With Overbought RSI

Bitcoin’s daily chart (YTD) on TradingView shows a decisive breakout from a multi-month consolidation, with the price surging from the low $60,000s in mid-August to an intraday high of $81,255 before settling near $78,950.

The asset has now reclaimed and closed above its 20-day EMA ($70,362), 50-day EMA ($67,273), 100-day EMA ($67,625), and 200-day EMA ($71,839), forming a bullish alignment of moving averages that had previously acted as dynamic resistance during the prolonged decline from higher levels earlier in the year. This vertical move marks a clear shift in short-to-medium-term structure after the extended downtrend and subsequent sideways action through June and July.

Chart further shows that the Relative Strength Index (14) has climbed to 82.01, firmly in overbought territory and well above its moving average near 63.84, reflecting the intensity of the recent advance. While such elevated readings often precede short-term consolidation or pullbacks, the strength of the breakout and the fact that price remains supported above the full stack of EMAs suggest underlying momentum remains intact for now.

Drivers Behind the Rally

The move followed policy signals from Washington that supported risk assets more broadly. The U.S. Treasury announced plans to expand its program of long-dated bond buybacks, aiming to ease pressure on yields that had climbed to multi-year highs. This step was widely viewed as injecting liquidity into financial markets and encouraging flows into alternative assets, including Bitcoin. Additional commentary from the administration regarding regulatory clarity for digital assets further buoyed sentiment among institutional participants.

U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds contributed to the demand side. Data from SoSoValue reported consecutive sessions of net inflows—amassing $517.2 million on August 19, $606.3 million on August 20, $307.5 million on August 21, and $337.6 million on August  24—totaling hundreds of millions of dollars in recent trading days, extending a streak that began the prior week and bringing August month-to-date net creations into the billions. These inflows reflected renewed institutional interest after earlier periods of outflows.

The combination of policy support and fund activity helped absorb available supply even as the market absorbed forced liquidations of short positions estimated in the billions of dollars across crypto derivatives earlier in the week.

Technical Readings and Analysts’ Cautions

Alongside the price breakthrough, momentum indicators pointed to stretched conditions. The 14-period Relative Strength Index on the daily chart climbed into the low-to-mid 80s, a reading well above the conventional overbought threshold of 70.

Analysts noted that such elevated RSI levels have historically accompanied periods of consolidation or short-term pullbacks even within broader uptrends, as rapid gains leave less immediate buying pressure in reserve.

$BTC liquidity map is getting interesting.$BTC is now around $77K, and there is a lot of liquidity sitting around $78K–$80K, while another big liquidity area is below around $75K–$73K.

“The daily chart is already very stretched with RSI above 85, so a pullback is definitely possible,” said @Crypto__Haris on X.

“Bitcoin’s move above the $80,000 mark signals a renewed improvement in market sentiment, with macroeconomic developments, institutional participation and growing optimism around crypto regulation supporting the rally,” said Mr. Vikas Gupta, Country Manager – India, Bybit.

“The speed of Bitcoin’s recent gains highlights how quickly liquidity and sentiment can influence crypto markets. While the breakout is encouraging, sharp price movements can also bring elevated volatility and short-term profit-taking,” Gupta further emphasized. “Investors should therefore look beyond price momentum and consider factors such as their risk appetite, position sizing and investment horizon before making decisions.”

Overall market capitalization for crypto assets expanded in tandem with Bitcoin’s gains, though the flagship asset continued to command a dominant share of total value. Sentiment gauges shifted into greed territory, reflecting the speed of the recovery from the year’s earlier lows near $58,000.

While the reclaim of $80,000 represents a technical milestone after an extended period below that threshold, the accompanying overbought readings indicate that traders are monitoring closely for signs of exhaustion. As noted by analysts, sustained closes above the level, supported by continued fund inflows and stable macro conditions, would be required to confirm a more durable shift.

In the near term, the market appears poised for potential consolidation as participants reassess positioning following the rapid advance.
