Key Highlights
- Kraken has raised the maximum BTC/USD margin leverage to 20x for eligible traders in select markets.
- The change applies only to the BTC/USD margin on Kraken Pro, not other margin pairs or futures.
- Existing liquidation prices, margin ratios, and take-profit/stop-loss tools remain unchanged.
Crypto exchange Kraken has raised the maximum leverage available on BTC/USD margin positions to 20x for eligible traders in select markets, increasing the exposure traders can take relative to the capital posted as margin.
According to the blog post published Tuesday, the change applies specifically to BTC/USD margin trading on Kraken Pro. It does not extend to other margin pairs or futures products.
Kraken said the update changes the leverage ceiling but does not alter the underlying margin engine or existing risk-management tools.
Kraken increases BTC/USD margin cap
Under the new limit, eligible traders can use up to 20x leverage on BTC/USD margin positions. At 20x leverage, a trader can control a position worth $20,000 with approximately $1,000 in margin, before accounting for maintenance-margin requirements and other applicable costs.
Kraken said the higher limit is intended to give traders more flexibility in sizing positions. “The margin engine, the order flow, and the account you already use are unchanged. Leverage is the only variable that moved,” the exchange said.
The update does not mean all users will automatically have access to 20x leverage. Kraken said availability varies by market and eligibility.
Existing risk controls remain in place
Kraken said the increase does not change how margin positions are monitored.
Liquidation prices, margin ratios and take-profit/stop-loss tools continue to operate under the existing system, while margin fees remain unchanged.
“Full margin visibility remains available at every step of a position’s life,” Kraken said.
The exchange also stressed that the 20x ceiling is an available limit rather than a requirement for traders to increase their exposure.
Higher leverage brings greater liquidation risk
The higher leverage leaves traders with less room for adverse price movements.
At 20x leverage, relatively small changes in Bitcoin’s price can have a significant impact on the trader’s margin. If a position falls below the required maintenance-margin level, it can be liquidated.
Kraken acknowledged the risk, noting that leverage increases both potential gains and losses. “A higher ceiling doesn’t change that math. It just changes how much room you have to work with,” the exchange said.
It also warned that margin trading carries significant risk and may result in losses exceeding a trader’s initial investment.
Recent $50M Bitcoin short highlights leverage risk
The announcement comes amid renewed attention on highly leveraged Bitcoin positions.
A $50 million Bitcoin short using 40x leverage was recently reported to be around $400 away from liquidation, highlighting how quickly heavily leveraged positions can approach forced closure during volatile market conditions.
The position is not related to Kraken’s 20x margin update. It does, however, show the narrow margin for error that comes with high-leverage Bitcoin trading.
The example also underscores the difference between increasing a platform’s maximum leverage and actually using that maximum. A higher cap allows traders to take on more exposure with less capital, but it also leaves positions more sensitive to relatively small market moves.
Update comes as Payward expands trading business
The margin change is one of several recent developments across Payward, Kraken’s parent company.
In July, Payward partnered with GTN to expand its xStocks tokenized-equity framework beyond U.S. stocks, beginning with Hong Kong-listed equities and planning further expansion into UK, European and South Korean markets, subject to regulatory approvals.
The two initiatives target different parts of the market: xStocks focuses on bringing traditional equities onto blockchain infrastructure, while the Kraken Pro update increases leverage available for BTC/USD margin traders.
For the margin product, the immediate change is that eligible traders in supported jurisdictions now have access to a maximum leverage cap of 20x on BTC/USD margin, with Kraken’s existing margin and liquidation framework remaining in place.
