Cloudflare Launches Wallets Completing Its Stablecoin Payment Rails for AI Agents

The wallets are the buyer-side complement to its Monetization Gateway, giving Cloudflare both sides of a machine-native payments market.

Cloudflare Launches Wallets Completing Its Stablecoin Payment Rails for AI Agents

Cloudflare launched its Wallets on Tuesday, following its Monetization Gateway debut earlier this month, establishing a two-sided market for agent payments.
The company’s Wallets and Gateway provide a complete payment solution, enabling agents to hold stablecoins and pay for services, with spending limits and guardrails set by owners.
Cloudflare’s move into stablecoin-settled payments is significant, given its position in front of a large share of internet traffic, and could signal a shift towards stablecoins as default infrastructure for the emerging agent economy.

Cloudflare has launched a stablecoin wallet built for AI agents, giving the internet-infrastructure company both halves of a machine-native payments market and deepening its bet that autonomous software will transact online using crypto rails. The company announced Cloudflare Wallets on Tuesday as part of its “Agents Week” series.

What Cloudflare Launched

The premise is that AI agents struggle to pay for things. They lack a stable identity to sign up for services and a native way to pay, so they often kick registration and payment back to a human. Cloudflare Wallets aims to remove that friction by letting agents hold stablecoins and pay for APIs, Model Context Protocol tools, and content directly.

The system has two tiers. Account Wallets are for the humans who own Cloudflare accounts, who add and remove funds and delegate spending. Virtual Wallets are for agents, operated via API keys, with spending capped by limits the human sets.

Owners can attach guardrails — an allowance, an allow-list, and a maximum transaction size — so an agent can explore and buy services autonomously without overspending. Payments run on the x402 protocol, an open standard originated by Coinbase that attaches micropayments to standard web requests. For now, only claiming a wallet handle is live; the company describes much of the payment functionality as coming soon.

Completing the Two-Sided Market

The more significant point is strategic. On July 1, 2026, Cloudflare launched its Monetization Gateway, which lets websites and APIs charge agents for content using stablecoins over x402 — the seller side of the equation. Wallets supplies the buyer side. Together, they give Cloudflare both ends of a headless marketplace: merchants that can charge agents and agents that can pay.

That matters because of Cloudflare’s position. The company sits in front of a large share of internet traffic, and it says the majority of web traffic is now driven by bots rather than humans. A firm with that footprint building stablecoin-settled payment rails on both sides is a meaningful signal that stablecoins are being positioned as default infrastructure for the emerging agent economy, not a speculative sidecar.

Why Stablecoins and x402

The design leans on crypto for a practical reason. Traditional payment methods — credit cards, monthly subscriptions, bank onboarding — are built for humans and handle sub-cent, high-frequency machine payments poorly. Stablecoins settle instantly and support micropayments, and x402 abstracts the blockchain mechanics behind a standard HTTP flow, so a merchant does not need to run a node.

x402 has drawn an unusually broad coalition: beyond Coinbase and Cloudflare, the x402 Foundation now under the Linux Foundation counts Stripe, Visa, Mastercard, Google, Amazon Web Services, Circle, and others among its members. Third-party forecasts have been bullish — McKinsey has projected the agentic-payments market could reach as much as $5 trillion by 2030 — though such estimates remain unproven.

Identity for Agents

Cloudflare paired the wallets with an identity layer. Through cloudflare.pay, an agent can optionally take a human-readable handle—for example, research.example.cloudflare.pay — that ties it to a Cloudflare account, letting merchants know which organization an agent represents. The company frames this as solving a trust gap: it is easy to give a free trial to a known human, hard to give one to an anonymous agent when one person can spin up dozens. The identity feature is optional and builds on Cloudflare’s existing bot-verification work.

The Caveats

For all the ambition, much of this is still a plan. The company’s own language is forward-looking — wallets “will allow” payments, funding options are coming “soon” — and today only the handle-claiming is live.

The broader thesis also depends on agentic commerce actually scaling, which remains early: there is still limited evidence of large-scale, production-ready agent payments, and questions persist about regulation and consumer protection as autonomous software begins moving money. What Cloudflare has done is assemble the pieces; whether the agent economy fills them in is the open question.
