In the early hours of July 27, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong opened a familiar argument by attacking its premise. “If you’re in crypto, pivot to AI,” he wrote, quoting the advice he says he has heard for years, before dismissing it as “zero sum, scarcity thinking.” The post was less a market call than a thesis statement about where he believes the two defining technologies of the decade are actually headed.
His framing was deliberate: crypto, in his telling, is not the next big thing but the thing the next big thing runs on. He likened it to electricity or the internet — infrastructure that “doesn’t compete with the next big thing, because it underpins it.” The line he wanted to land was a rhetorical one: crypto and AI are “an ‘and’, not an ‘or’.” Far from threatening crypto, he argued, the AI megatrend “makes crypto more important.”
Then came the reveal. Armstrong wrapped the argument in a brand: “Welcome to the world of Agentic Finance (AiFi). This is what Coinbase is building.”
Machines need money humans’ rails can’t move
The load-bearing idea in Armstrong’s post is not new for him, but he stated it more bluntly than before: AI agents “will eventually transact far more per day than all humans combined.” The problem, as he framed it, is that the legacy financial system was never designed for software. Agents cannot open a bank account, cannot wait three days for a wire, and do not reside in any single jurisdiction. What they need, he argued, is “real time programmable money,” and that, in his words, “is crypto.”
The argument tracks a position Armstrong has pressed consistently through 2026. As he has argued previously, AI agents cannot satisfy the Know Your Customer checks banks are built around, while crypto wallets generated from private keys carry no such barrier. It is a neat framing, and a self-serving one: the company selling the shovels is describing the gold rush.
The stack behind the slogan: x402, Base, and USDC
AiFi is a marketing wrapper around infrastructure Coinbase has been shipping for over a year. The centerpiece is x402, a payment protocol that revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code, letting AI agents and software make instant stablecoin payments onchain without logins, API keys, or subscription accounts. When an agent hits a paid endpoint, the server returns a 402 response, the agent signs a USDC payment, and the request completes in seconds.
Armstrong’s claim that x402, Base, and USDC “power the vast majority of all agentic payments” is broadly supported by the ecosystem’s own numbers, with the combination reportedly facilitating the majority of agentic payments as of mid-2026. Notably, Coinbase no longer fully controls the standard it created. The protocol has since been donated to a neutral foundation and now sits under Linux Foundation governance, backed by Google, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, AWS, and Circle. That breadth of backing is the strongest evidence for Armstrong’s thesis, and, as we’ll see, also its biggest complication.
What agents will actually do with money
The most expansive part of the post was Armstrong’s sketch of agent behaviour. Agents, he wrote, will hold funds and pay for things themselves, engage in trading, act as a financial advisor, and even “raise or borrow money for new projects they are undertaking.” On the consumer side, he pointed to agents eliminating everyday financial chores: tax planning, portfolio rebalancing, and bill pay.
It is a sweeping vision, and it is not Armstrong’s alone. Crypto executives including Armstrong and CZ have leaned into the agentic-payments narrative, and McKinsey has estimated that AI agents could mediate $3 trillion to $5 trillion of global consumer commerce by 2030. The direction of travel is not seriously disputed. The timing, and who captures it, is.
The counterpoint: the narrative is running ahead of the volume
Here the AiFi framing meets its most stubborn obstacle, the onchain reality is far smaller than the rhetoric.
The headline adoption figures look impressive at first glance. As of April 2026, x402 alone had processed over 165 million transactions across roughly 69,000 active agents. But transaction counts are not commerce: that same activity generated only around $50 million in cumulative volume, and by many estimates roughly half of it appears to be testing rather than genuine economic activity. Earlier reporting was blunter still — one report found that despite a multi-billion-dollar ecosystem valuation, onchain data at one point showed x402 processing only about $28,000 in daily volume, much of it from testing and “gamed” transactions rather than real commerce.
There is also a structural friction Armstrong’s vision glosses over: the approval gap. According to Artemis data, x402’s recovery has come in the form of high-frequency, low-value payments averaging around $0.52, where a manual wallet confirmation on every transaction imposes a human-time cost that can exceed the value of a sub-cent API call. Truly autonomous agents cannot wait for a human to tap “approve” on every micropayment, which is precisely why the major players are now racing to build authorization frameworks, with Google donating its AP2 “mandate” system to the FIDO Alliance to define what an agent may spend, when, and within what limits.
The competitive squeeze
Armstrong’s “this is what Coinbase is building” lands differently once the field is in view. Coinbase pioneered the category, but it is no longer alone in it. The agentic-payments stack now includes Coinbase’s x402, Google’s AP2, Skyfire, Mastercard Agent Pay, and Visa Intelligent Commerce, a mix of open onchain protocols and tokenized card credentials competing to route the same machine spend. Rival stablecoin rails are emerging too: the Trump-family-backed World Liberty Financial has launched its own agent-payment infrastructure using the USD1 stablecoin.
That is the paradox buried in the AiFi announcement. The institutional backing that validates Armstrong’s thesis, Visa, Mastercard, Google, AWS all treating agentic payments as real, is the same force that erodes Coinbase’s first-mover moat. A category big enough to matter is a category too big for any one company to own.
The takeaway
Stripped of the branding, Armstrong’s post is directionally hard to argue with: if autonomous agents proliferate, they will need programmable, borderless, always-on money, and stablecoins on fast chains are the obvious candidate. The “and, not an or” framing is a genuinely useful corrective to a lazy market narrative that treats every AI headline as a crypto obituary.
But AiFi, as a term, is doing two jobs at once. One is descriptive, naming a real and growing category. The other is promotional, planting Coinbase’s flag on it before the volume, the authorization standards, and the competitive shakeout have resolved. The infrastructure lead is real. The economy it is meant to serve is still, for now, mostly a promise. Whether AiFi becomes the next foundational layer of finance or the next well-marketed acronym will be decided not by a 3 AM manifesto, but by whether agents ever start spending real money at scale, and whether, when they do, it flows through Coinbase’s rails or someone else’s.
