Polkadot Opens Public Devnet Ahead of Production Network

Key Highlights

  • Polkadot launched a new public Products Devnet for developers to build and test applications before its upcoming production network goes live.
  • Developers can test Polkadot’s upcoming tools without real money, including its SDK, .dot domains, mobile, desktop, and web applications.
  • The launch follows testing with around 900 people at the 2026 Web3 Summit, while DOT fell 3.41% to around $0.8116 at the time of reporting.

Polkadot, a decentralized blockchain, has launched a new public testing network for developers worldwide, providing a platform to build and test applications before its upcoming production network goes live.

In an X post on Thursday, the network said the Products Devnet was launched by the Paseo team with the Polkadot Community Foundation to let developers test new products, apps, and features without using real money or risking real assets.

What developers can do with new devnet

The launch gives developers access to a working version of Polkadot’s upcoming product environment. Builders can test how their applications work, find problems, and make changes before those products are introduced to the production network. Instead of waiting until a product is live to discover that something is wrong, developers can now test it in a separate environment where mistakes do not carry the same financial risk.

The new devnet also opens the door to a wider group of builders. Before now, some of Polkadot’s new product features were tested during the 2026 Web3 Summit in Berlin. Around 900 people took part in the proof-of-concept testing, using Polkadot-based products for payments, communication, and identity verification.

The team said the tests were designed to show how these products could work in everyday use. Participants were able to use the features without needing to understand all the technical processes happening behind the scenes.

Following the successful testing, the platform is now available to a broader developer community rather than being limited to Web3 Summit participants.

Devnet comes with a full developer toolkit

The Products Devnet was built on Paseo, Polkadot’s community-run testnet, and is operated by the Paseo team. Developers can now use the public environment to start building and testing applications connected to Polkadot’s new product system.

The network supports developer versions of Polkadot’s Mobile, Desktop, and Web applications. These versions are being made available for testing through GitHub for Android and Web, while the iOS version is available through TestFlight. The applications include features that are expected to be part of Polkadot’s mainnet in the future.

How builders can bring apps to life

According to the team, developers can also use the Product SDK and command-line tools to create and publish their applications. In addition, a builder can create a web app, register a .dot domain through DotNS, publish the app bundle, and add the finished application to the Browse section so other developers can find it.

The devnet also integrates services for .dot domain naming, the CDM contract registry, and identity. Together, these tools give developers a way to test different parts of the Polkadot product environment before the system reaches its production stage.

For Polkadot, the new devnet marks a move from limited product testing to wider developer access. Builders can now experiment with the network’s upcoming tools without using real funds, allowing them to test ideas and work through problems before applications are moved closer to the mainnet.

DOT token slipped despite the developer launch

While the developer network has launched, DOT, the network’s native token, has come under market pressure.

At the time of this writing, DOT was trading at around $0.8116, down 3.41% on the day after reaching a daily high above $0.850. At the same time, trading activity also declined by about 9.41% to approximately $62.25 million.
