CFTC Chair Selig Backs c After Senate Draft Release

Key Highlights

  • CFTC Chairman Mike Selig reiterated support for the CLARITY Act after meeting Senator Ashley Moody.
  • Selig said clear crypto market rules are needed to ensure “the new frontier of finance is built in the United States.”
  • His comments come as Congress continues negotiating key provisions of the CLARITY Act.

Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Mike Selig has once again publicly backed the CLARITY Act, arguing that regulatory certainty is critical if the United States wants to remain a global leader in digital asset innovation.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Selig said he discussed commodity derivatives markets and crypto regulation during a meeting with Senator Ashley Moody of Florida. “We also discussed the importance of regulatory CLARITY for crypto asset markets to ensure the new frontier of finance is built in the United States,” he wrote.

The chairman added that the meeting also covered the importance of well-functioning commodity derivatives markets for Florida’s farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers. While the meeting itself was routine, Selig’s public emphasis on crypto regulation comes as lawmakers released an updated version of the legislation.

Senate moves CLARITY Act forward with revised draft

Selig’s latest comments came hours after Senate Republicans released an updated draft of the CLARITY Act, signaling that negotiations over the crypto market structure bill are entering a critical phase.

The revised proposal retains the legislation’s core framework for regulating digital asset markets while introducing new ethics provisions for public officials. It also preserves key elements of the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act (BRCA) alongside stablecoin-related measures.

The updated draft is expected to serve as the basis for the next stage of Senate negotiations, with lawmakers working to resolve remaining differences before the bill can advance toward a floor vote.

Why the CLARITY Act still matters

The comments arrive as Congress continues negotiating the CLARITY Act, a market structure bill that would establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets in the United States. The legislation seeks to clarify the responsibilities of the CFTC and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) while creating clearer rules for crypto exchanges, securities, swaps, and crypto event contracts.

Although the bill has advanced through Congress, lawmakers are still working to resolve disagreements over several provisions, including stablecoin regulation, decentralized finance (DeFi), software developer protections, and the balance of oversight between federal agencies.

Industry participants have argued that passing the legislation would reduce regulatory uncertainty and encourage innovation to remain in the United States rather than moving offshore.

Selig has consistently voiced support for the legislation. In April, the CFTC chairman urged Congress to send the CLARITY Act to President Donald Trump, saying he remained optimistic lawmakers would finalize the bill and describing regulatory clarity as essential for the long-term development of U.S. crypto markets.

Selig keeps pushing for regulatory clarity

The latest meeting with Senator Moody reflects engagement between federal regulators and lawmakers as digital asset legislation remains one of Washington’s key financial policy priorities.

While the timeline for a final Senate vote remains uncertain, Selig’s public endorsements indicate the CFTC continues to view the CLARITY Act as a critical step toward establishing predictable rules for digital asset markets.
