Five-time UFC champion and Irish presidential hopeful Conor McGregor is making waves in the crypto world. After urging Ireland to build a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, McGregor is now headed to El Salvador to meet President Nayib Bukele, a known Bitcoin supporter.
The high-level meeting will take place during the Bitcoin Nation State Summit. According to journalist Max Keiser, the two leaders will discuss how Ireland can follow El Salvador’s example and start accumulating Bitcoin for national reserves.
Keiser hinted that McGregor wants to roll out a “nation-state Saylor play”—a reference to Michael Saylor’s aggressive Bitcoin strategy at MicroStrategy.
McGregor has called for Ireland to adopt Bitcoin as a way to “give power back to the people.” He believes a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve would increase financial independence and bring long-term value to the country.
The UFC star isn’t just looking at Bitcoin. He’s also exploring how other cryptocurrencies could improve government processes. “I see lots of transparent and trustless applications within crypto,” he said, stressing Bitcoin’s role as an “immutable people’s money.”
However, not all of McGregor’s crypto moves have been hits. His recent memecoin launch flopped, but with Bitcoin prices rising, he’s now focused on more serious crypto goals.
There’s even speculation he may propose a broader Digital Asset Stockpile alongside the Bitcoin reserve. Whether or not that happens, McGregor’s bold crypto push is putting Ireland in the global spotlight.
