President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador took potshots at former US senator Robert Menendez who received an 11-year prison term on Wednesday on corruption charges. Incidentally, Menendez had earlier objected to the Central American nation adopting Bitcoin stating, “BTC can open doors of corruption in El Salvador.”
On Wednesday, former Senator from New Jersey, Robert Menendez received an 11-year prison sentence after being convicted of accepting bribes to undercut basic justice when helping businessmen associated with Egypt and Qatar. He said he would appeal against the verdict.
The court handed down an 11-year prison term to a retired powerful US senator because he faced corruption charges after discovering multiple gold bars as well as cash totaling hundreds of thousands at his residential property. Federal prosecutors seized $100,000 in gold bars and $480,000 in hidden cash from his house.
The 70-year-old democrat and former senator Robert Menendez has been a vocal anti-crypto advocate and had once famously remarked that Bitcoin is an “ideal choice for criminals.” He had also advocated against El Salvador accepting Bitcoin as a legal currency under President Nayib Bukele calling it a tool for corruption and money laundering.
