Tether and Bitfinex general counsel Stuart Hoegner leaves

Stuart Hoegner, who has served as the general counsel for both Tether and Bitfinex has parted ways from the crypto firms.

This development is indicated by an update to his profile on X, now identifying him as the “Former GC @Bitfinex @Tether_to,” signaling the end of his decade-long association that began when he joined Bitfinex in 2014, as noted on his LinkedIn profile.

Hoegner’s departure marks a notable transition period for these sister firms. Recent archival data from Tether’s “About Us” page confirm that Hoegner was still listed as the general counsel as late as Christmas Eve.

However, the current version of the page now exclusively lists key executives such as Chief Executive Paolo Ardoino, Chief Financial Officer Giancarlo Devasini, and Chief Operating Officer Claudia Lagorio. Similarly, Bitfinex’s records show that Hoegner was listed until November but is no longer featured.

This change comes amid other executive movements within these organizations. Tether has recently parted ways with its Chief Compliance Officer, Leonardo Real, and Bitfinex has removed Peter Warrack from a similar role, as evidenced by updates to their respective “About Us” pages.

In response to inquiries regarding the current leadership in the legal department, both Tether and Bitfinex issued a statement to Protos, introducing Michael Hilliard as the new general counsel.

Hilliard has been instrumental in co-leading the legal efforts alongside Hoegner for several years, bringing a deep understanding of both companies’ operations and a strategic approach to navigating the complex legal and regulatory landscape of cryptocurrency. The statement also confirmed that Hoegner has decided to retire.
