Jennifer Jones, who has run Coinbase’s accounting function since 2018 and through its stock market debut, is retiring.
She notified the company on September 29, according to a Form 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on October 2 and signed by Chief Financial Officer Alesia Haas. Jones will continue as Chief Accounting Officer and Principal Accounting Officer until the roles transition to a successor and will work with whoever is appointed.
Coinbase has begun searching for candidates. It gave no timetable. The filing includes the standard assurance that such departures require: her decision “is not the result of any disagreement with Coinbase on any matter relating to its operations, policies, or practices.” The company said it is grateful for her contributions.
What the Role Covers
The Chief Accounting Officer oversees global accounting, technical policy, and financial and regulatory reporting. Jones joined Coinbase in 2018, three years before its direct listing, after more than a decade in advisory and audit roles at Ernst & Young and Deloitte working on IPOs, internal controls, and SEC reporting requirements.
That function carries particular weight at a crypto company. Coinbase’s reported results swung with the fair value of the digital assets it holds—the gap between a $394 million GAAP net loss and $303 million in positive adjusted EBITDA in the first quarter was largely mark-to-market movement on crypto holdings.
No Terms Disclosed
The filing discloses no severance, no accelerated vesting, and no restrictive covenants—a contrast with the departure of Circle’s Chief Financial Officer the previous week, whose 8-K set out a $1.05 million package and a 12-month non-compete.
The difference is explained by what each filing had to report. A retirement where the officer stays until a successor arrives, with no separation agreement signed, has no compensatory arrangement to disclose.
Jones will remain in post until Coinbase names a replacement.
